Given the insane offers out there, I booked a SFO-BOS same day rt on UA for tomorrow. I've never done a same day trip before, so I'd appreciate some help.
I tried to check-in online and I can only do so for SFO-LAX-BOS. I searched the forums and it seems that this is always the case. My question is what do I do at BOS? Do I need to get out, check-in and pass security? Or is it possible to go straight to the gate? I have just 58 mins so I am not sure I can do the first option. And what happens if my BOS arrival is delayed? I realize I should have asked these questions before, but I was in a hurry to book the ticket before it goes away.
Anyone else doing the same tomorrow? There are my flights:
UA261 SFO-LAX
UA162 LAX-BOS
UA179 BOS-SFO

I also have a MR to BOS tomorrow and we are on the same flight BOS-SFO. My routing is SEA-DEN-BOS-SFO-SEA. I also can't check in yet for my SFO-SEA leg. I haven't been to BOS in years, but you should be able to go straight to your gate and not have to exit the secure area. You can check in for your BOS-SFO leg anytime after 5:38 pm tonight.
If a flight is late, UA should automatically rebook you. I always have my phone ready to call anyway. Also, I am always prepared to have to spend the night somewhere, as it's happened to me a couple of times already.

I am not familiar with UA but normally for a return I will check in at the 24 hour mark and print my boarding passes from home. Your current trip probably wasn't eligible yet, hence you couldn't check in.
Worst case if I forget I just get the return passes from a kiosk or from an agent on the outbound.
58 minutes is cutting it close but if everything is on time you should be ok. I would think you could get your boarding pass from the gate agent as well?

one thing about olci with ua on a 24 hour m/r is that you can check in for your subsequent/return flights at t-24 hours so where you are flying back on ua179 you should be able to olci at 5:38pm est (which is 2:38pst for us ;)) so at that time, go back to olci and after you log in, look for a link that says "view additional flights (or something similar) and you should be able to check-in. once you have done olci for your return flight, you're good to go and can simply go to the gate for your bos-sfo flight
if for some reason you can't olci, you can always have an agent at sfo and/or lax do it for you if you have time but if not, you won't have to exit security at bos to check-in. simply go the gate for your return flight and have them check you in but if that be the case, do it asap as you don't want to be caught not checking in at t-30 minutes.

Thanks people, I hadn't realized that I still haven't crossed the 24h point for BOS-SFO. I'll try again later and hopefully everything will be fine.

Tomorrow is my first MR - please helpIf you've already booked your MR, you're beyond help. You're one of us now. Welcome to the club!
If I don't have all of my boarding passes when I get to the airport, I just have them printed at the club or the gate, during one of my other stops. No need to leave the secured area and come back through. I did several 3-4 day runs back in May. On one, I never left the secured areas (for three days)! I slept on redeyes every night and showered and worked in the clubs. I had new boarding passes printed in the clubs each day.

I have often had this happen... worst case, just have the agent at your starting point print out your boarding passes.
If you check in at the kiosk at the airport, I bet you that it will print out all your boarding passes. At least that has been the case for me, including turnaround trips to Australia.
GOOD LUCK on your mileage run....

I'm really sorry to ask such an obvious question, but since this isn't the United board, some people may have missed it.
Just wanted to make sure you know to sign up for the double miles promotion so the miles on your flights get doubled.
It's pretty amazing the number of people I've sat next to and asked and they look at you with that Deer in the Headlights look.
Double status miles? Really?

Hi all,
I'm also doing my first MR tomorrow on AA-- MIA-BOS-SFO-BOS-MIA!! Is there any way to tell whether my BOS-SFO plane in the evening will be the same plane on the turnaround 1hr 10mins later for the redeye back to BOS? If it was the same plane, I assume if there are any inbound delays, then that would transfer to an outbound delay and I wouldn't miss the flight back?
Thanks!

Enjoy your first MR.
There are easy check in's at BOS between the gates (inside security) that UA uses, so you can always print them there. Also try LAX easy check in's or have a GA print for you.
IMHO Boston's a quick and easy turn so as long as you get in on time 58 minutes will be okay.
Good Luck

Well, I did check-in online now, no problems. As people said, you can check-in for your return trip 24h before the _return_ trip starts and not 24h before your first segment.
And yes, I'm enrolled in the DEQM promo :)

I had that issue once. I just got another boarding pass on one of my stops when I had 2 hours to kill.

If you're lucky, the gate agents and/or crew will be the same and remember you from the inbound flight.
The looks from those uniniated into the MR world are priceless! :p

The looks from those uniniated into the MR world are priceless! :pOn my last one (DFW-IAD-DFW-SJC-LAX-IAD-DFW), the gate agent asked "Are you doing one of those mileage things?" then "Wow! You got ALL OF THAT in First Class for $375?!?". When I told her that it would also earn me about 50k RDM (factoring in the ELTRW bonus), she was even more amazed.

On my last MR to BOS, I was hoping no one would recognize me. I guess I was tired and didn't want to have to explain :)

Just got back from the trip, everything went smoothly! It turned out that the same plane that flied me LAX-BOS also did BOS-SFO. As the LAX-BOS segment was pretty much empty, I was worried that the crew would recognize me and give me weird looks, but fortunately we got a new crew at BOS. It was nice to chat with 6rugrats and another person on a MR at the gate. 6rugrats suggested that MRs can also be seen as a challenge and I must say I agree :)
Another day trip to IAD on Tuesday and then the remainder is just regular trips. An exciting year!

This was my first time meeting another person from FT! It was a pleasure to meet and speak with koroleon! Good luck on your next run.
I did run into another person, sitting across the aisle from me the entire trip, SEA-DEN-BOS-SFO-SEA, who was making the first of three MR as a result of an invitation she says she received from UA, offering her GS, if she completed these flights this year.
I spoke with several FAs who thanked us for our business, and all were aquainted with the crazy people who fly back and forth all over the country to earn miles!

Another day trip to IAD on Tuesday and then the remainder is just regular trips. An exciting year!glad it all worked out ^ and "welcome to the club" and as to having the same crew on connecting m/r flights, it all depends on the routing and the length of the flight. on flights say lax-bos and then bos-sfo, it will probably be a different crew based on the length of the flight but on shorter flights, you can have the same crew (like i did on ua99 iad-tpa and then tpa-iad 2 hours later last week ;)) and no, you generally won't get any "funny looks" but you may get things like "oh, you're one of those folks" or 'we usually don't see you/you're kind until much closer to the end of the year ;)

I thought I was busted yesterday while on a MR. I was walking to my seat and I heard the FAs say, "She was just on this flight and she was sitting there." I thought they were talking about me, but they were talking about a passenger who flew out with them the day before. They were all joking about her short trip. They had no idea that I had just landed on the incoming flight, deplaned, and got back on the same plane, different seat. I kept laughing to myself about my "short trip."
On the short legs, I always ask the FAs if they are doing a turn around, because generally they freak when you step back on the plane. So if they say they are doing a turn around, I tell them that I am as well.

That's a good idea. I may try that next time. I just did a turn around in BOS where I roamed Logan for ten hours. I took the same BOS-SFO flight a few weeks earlier and recognized the FA, so when I saw her on the outbound SFO-BOS, I was hoping she wouldn't also be on the return, as I had not showered or changed all night. It turns out they changed gates, and probably planes and crew.

Or let's not forget the fun when you are flying from say BOS-LAX-BOS and the crew announces connecting gates at LAX. I was on a MR when a FA thanked those on board for doing MRs! (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mileage-run-discussion/950347-fa-thanks-mrers.html)
Once on one leg of a MR a FA recalled the time she saw a pax doing a immediate return. She showed the connecting gate list to the purser and asked if that looked suspicious. The purser laughed and explained MRs to the questioning FA.

My 1st mileage run went very well this weekend. It was a different crew on my BOS-SFO-BOS turnaround, but the same plane. So, I only got one funny look from the GA when asking her if it was the same gate. I honestly kept giving myself funny looks because it felt very strange to be flying for no reason...on the way back it felt a bit less surreal since I had a purpose--to go home! My seatmate on BOS-SFO was also finishing up a mileage run so it was very nice to meet an actual person as looney as me!! I was also very impressed with the trans-con F service since I usually only fly F in the 2-4 hour flights. Food was good and the sundaes were awesome!!

My range of emotions usually go something like this:
1) flying out, excited, starting a new adventure
2) landing, worried, what if I don't make my connection?
3) turning around, surreal, did I just fly across the country to get back in a plane going back?
4) flying back, relaxed, on my way home :)
5) take the bus home, tired, wish I had more sleep
6) wake up the next day, when's my next mileage run?
