Qantas Frequent Flyer - What happens if carry on bag is more then 7KG (domestic travel)

Good afternoon members

I just brought a brand new notebook 18.4 sizes and it waights 4.4kg
I also brought a 17 sizes bag for the notebook and was lucky enough to fit the notebook in.

I dont actually no how heavy the bag alone is but i do know that Qantas max is no more then just 7kilos on board. Carry on bag.

So my concern is.. What might happen if my notebook bag was around 8 or 10kilos ? Would they force me to leave the bag or take things out ? This is for carry on bag.

I understand that the big luggage can have nothing more then 18 or 20kilos i believe (please correct me if im mistaken) For domestic traveler within australia. But when i do travel it dosnt go any higher then just 12kilos.

But my big concern is my big notebook and putting the notebook in my carry on bag does feel double heavier indeed. I think maybe 10kilos.

So not too sure about the rules or what happens if it goes over permited 7kilos.

thank you
Happy traveling.

If it is large, or 'looks more than 7kg' the person at the gate might make you test it in the measurement device.

My experience is if it is more than 7kg and you can't check it (my normal issue is camera + laptop) they make you take something out of your bag and carry everything on seperately. A pain but, once you get on, you can put your bag back together and no further problems......

If the bag is too large then it might be different.....

It is rarely enforced (saw it once at SYD international about 5 years ago and was causing havoc). LHR is the most common place that enforces the carryon limits, though not so much in recent years. Of course carrying such a heavy laptop around gets to be incredibly tiresome (why I now have 3 laptops, keep getting lighter ones).

Interestingly I saw Etihad waive the laptop weight when measuring cabin baggage for First class for a family member traveling for 10 days without checked luggage! She literally weighed the bag, then asked if there was a laptop in it, and once confirmed said it was fine.

OMG not again. I'll give it 5 days before this thread turns into a sh!t fight and is closed down.
Never had a problem at SYD (but I don't carry a huge carry-on bag. Its only CX International in MEL that is pedantic about 7 kgs.

Only if you fly domestically on a Dash 8 will the size and weight of your carrier on luggage be checked.

I have had my carry on checked out of Perth on a domestic flight; and more recently I was on an international flight out of Brisbane when my carry on luggage was weighed.

Guys and Girls. Thank you for your replys.

Yes well the shoulder notebook 17" sizes bag i dont no how heavy it is but dosnt feel that heavy at all maybe a 2 or 3kilos with nothing in it. Notebook is 4.4kilos 18.4sizes screen but fits OK in the 17 sizes bag... So having the notebook in the bag it feels much heavier then the notebook itself... more like around 8 to 10kilos aproximate... So thats the problem when something is heavy it means trouble when you need to travel. Oh though i suppose i could put the notebook in the luggage but thats even worse because lugages are allways thrown around at cargo and having a notebook in it may never be safe. So yeah. I mean if they ask me to pay money for the waight thats ok just so long it wont be hective price. I only just doing domestic travel brisbane to sydney.

I went to crazzy clarks the ather day and found one of these that has a hook and a presure measure manual thing that you hook the bag on it and the pointy arrow will show how heavy it is.. I am not very sure if this kinder stuff will ever give a prove acuracy and because it only cost around 8.00 dollars from crazzy clarks. Not sure if these things are good. But its to see how heavy the bag is.. small manual device with a hook underneith it.

thanks

EDIT: Last year when i was traveling brisbane to victoria i was carrying on a 16 sizes bag and i was carrying that on my shoulder plus holding a small digital video camera on my hand and they never ask me about the shoulder bag at all they did not made me waight it at all which i was happy and quite suprise...... But from brisbane they sure did. But a 17 sizes bag is much bigger sizes then the one i was carring on last year. Just because ive recently brought this new 17 sizes shoulder bag with the new notebook. I just dont no what i would do but would be good to just to make sure how heavy it all be.... i wonder where could i do this test so that i dont end up having all kinds of problems at the airport taking things out infront of everyone.

SQ are too. I got pinged for 7.1 kilos and had to remove stuff to get under the limit, then had to re-weigh at immigration (the entrance to security there) as well.

Then found out that my new "lightweight" carryon Burton suitcase weighs 4.6kg empty due to its double-reinforced base and heavy duty wheels and bearings.

Was flying J, SYD-JNB back in the day.

There were 5 of us, the 747-444 family in tow, and some anal check in lady demanded to weigh our carry on bags.

I politely told her what she can do with her opinion and ideas. It isn't that I disagree with her but it was her way of doing it. She was saying that if any bag weighed over 7kgs she would demand we check it in. It wasn't even a polite way of doing it.

Meh you can't fully write how I felt at the time without sounding like a prick.

Dash 8s rock. I take my standard carry on, I think the largest u can use of domestic, and it gets tagged at the gate as premium hand lugagge, and returned to the foot of the aircraft when disembarking. It basically goes in the cargo hold, but with no queues or waiting.

I wouldn't be to worried about it. I took 2bags & a jacket on JQ the other night not one person said anything about it.

If you carry-on looks a little heavy try to prevent the Check-in agent from seeing it. Such as place in on the floor in front of the counter when your checking in.

Yep good tips there.

I think i will try fine a place to see how heavy the carry on bag will be. I know it will be between 7 to 9 kilos... Ill be damn worried if over all it was no point taking my business notebook in its own notebook bag.

I could allways put it in the luggage but very risky that it could break because cargos allways shove luggage around throwing them one on top of another. So very risky there.

Do you think its best to just go to the airport and waight the bag ? if so where in the airport. Im not traveling just yet. Just need a location to waight it or perhaps buy one eof these cheap things that waights it. Or maybe buy a scale from kmart ? you know the one that you stand on it to see how heavy you are.

Thank you
happy travel^

Going by Qantas.com.au laptops are treated as a special item.

...i wonder where could i do this test so that i dont end up having all kinds of problems at the airport taking things out infront of everyone.I purchased a $40 digital, hand held weigher from Strand Bags a month or so ago. It works for weights up to 45kg, so designed for cabin or hold bags, and adjusting your bag(s) before you even get to the airport. (It adds 200g to my overall weight though!)

On QF, I rarely get weighed, on the odd occasion I have (and been around 10kg) I haven't experienced a problem. On JQ the cabin rate is 10kg, so not a problem for me anyway. On DJ I have never been weighed. On TT I always get weighed, a fraction over 7kg and you have to check it. (But, their scales seem to have about a 100g lenience calibrated in at T4 MEL.)

At Australian International airport terminals, where they weigh your carryon as you pass into the controlled area, I have come up at 10kg many times and never been stopped. (I assume that this check point is for federal standards rather than individual/variable airline standards, and 10kg is fine?)

Should you only have one bag for domestic, which is overweight, I wouldn't worry, as you are allowed two. You can always put your laptop in a supermarket carry bag and re-unite it with it's proper bag once on board.

I usually carry a targus backpack which is bursting at the seams (Laptop, Projector, Camera, Book, associated cords), which is easily 13kg. I've never had QF weigh it.

On some occasions, I have had reason to go carry on only (tight connections) - my record is 45kg carry on - however, I don't recommend trying, as you do stand to face a major problem if they refuse to let you carry it on board.

In my experience domestic isn't an issue - the staff seem more concerned about volume than weight (large rollaboards often get apprehended). As long as you don't take up the entire overhead locker, you're generally fine.

International on the other hand you will often get weighed (Akl, Syd, Mel for example), though they seem to let me through with 10-13 kg each time after I say that I'll take the laptop and book out.

You might also face a major problem if it falls on someones head if you try to put it in an overhead locker.

If you're going to put that much weight in the overhead locker, you should take the seat directly underneath it - you can't expect someone else to be pummelled by all your stuff!

A bit OT; we flew TT on the weekend for the first time. I checked in 1 piece weighing just 8KG, and had the exact same type of luggage (but with the EeePC laptop in it) that showed 8.4KG.
I told the lady I had the laptop in it, so she asked if I could pull out to re-check the weight which came to 6.9KG. My wife had a jacket in her hand and carried a purse (no problems there).

On both Qantas and Virgin, I have never been asked to weigh my carry on luggage.
But on Emirates earlier this year (I posted this experience on EK forum) we had this ridiculous check in lady who asked us to weigh our carry-ons (same as the ones we took on TT) even though we were in F, and had no luggage to check in.

TT's policy is clear, strict and straight forward, but other airlines' aren't necessarily enforced.

We have also purchased one of the electronic scales mentioned by maybe1. They seem to work really well and i'd have to say this is the buy of the week.
