Mileage Run Discussion - UA: 2 segments with same flight number, how many miles?

I know that normally if you have 2 segments with the same flight number, it only counts as 1 segment towards status and you get the miles as if it had been a direct flight.
However, I am looking at a MR from BUF to SJC. The route I am looking includes ..... SBA-SJC-SBA .....
Both of these segments have the same flight number UA5916 and only a 26 minute turn around time in SJC. I presume it's the same plane turning around so I should be fine for connection time (assuming I'm even allowed to book it), but will I get credit for 2 segments and 1000 miles? (I'm crediting to AC Aeroplan, so the min is still 500/segment.) The alternative is 1 segment and no miles, which doesn't make much sense.

if you have a ticket for each, it will post as 2 flights....i can't imagine a routing like that on 1 ticket [sba-sba w stop in sjc]....good luck....

Is this common to have the same flight number?! I am used to flights always having different numbers, YVR-HKG might be AC007 then HKG-YVR is AC008.

Not common, but it happens. Every now and then there are posts from people asking why they didn't get their full miles. One example off the top of my head is AC92 YYZ-SCL-EZE. According to Great Circle Mapper, total miles are about 6040, but you will only be credited as if it was a direct flight, i.e. 5560 miles.

Many of the United Express flights have one flight number for a round trip flight. I did the same SBA-SJC-SBA earlier this month and both segments posted with 500mi minimum to UA MP.
Two tips:
Bring earplugs for the EMB-120s.
There's free wi-fi at SBA.

I'm doing IAD-JAX-IAD this weekend as part of a MR and both directions (on UAX) have the same flight number.

Thank you both for confirming that I won't get 0 miles!
I always have ear plugs and an eye mask for MRs.
Free wifi at SBA sounds great, except I have all of 29 minutes during my first stop and 28 minutes during my second (and 26 mins in SJC). Hope everything's on time, but if not, guess I can just skip segments 4 and 5 of the 8 (after letting UA know)! Thankfully there's no snow or deicing to contend with in SBA!

When you exit the plane at SBA you will follow the leader out of the secure area. There's no way to stay inside. Getting back into the gate area doesn't take long though; just move quickly to make your tight connection.. Hang a right after you exit to the curb. The gates are the first hall on the right. The secong hall on the right is the check in counter/restrooms/snack shop.

that's not true. just have your BP out and tell them you are connecting, then you won't have to go through security again. you'll wait for all the pax to exit then they will take you directly into the terminal. with only 26 mins, i wouldn't advise going through security again. it's true, it likely will add no more than 5 mins, but why risk it.
ps - if it is running late, and it's the same plane, you'll see pax already outside with BP's scanned and just waiting to walk to the plane. i once just went straight there, and they said they'd make sure they "scanned" my bp - it all worked out fine. they obviously knew what i was doing.
