View Full Version : What to do with 16.500 FP points

Hi guys,
I'm new here and would like to ask for an advice. I was stupid enough to sign up with Finnair Plus and accumulated 16,500 points. I also have AAdvantage, OnePass and SkyMiles accounts. It is impossible to transfer points unless I have 20,000 and even then the exchange rate is ridiculous (like 10,000 Priority Club points for 20,000 FP points :( ). So, would you suggest what could I possibly do with those rather then just sticking them in the obvious place? There's an Avis offer for 3 days over the weekend for 20,000 FP, do you think this would be possible to get a car for 4 days for these points and a $100 Avis voucher? Thanks in advance.

(I still prefer to fly to Europe on Finnair though. The service is much better then AA or BA, for example. But I collect all 100% miles to my AA).

What I would is that I'd collect 3.5k more to the AY account, then I'd use the 20k to upgrade intra Europe rtn flight.

And welcome to FT!

Yes, an upgrade would probably be the best value to aim for. But apart from that:

Use the points for lowering the price of your ticket with the new "anytime award" (for example, to pay for the difference between the cheapest and a more flexible fare) or money+points offers.

Buy a set of two cappuccino cups (https://www.finnairplusshop.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=10&products_id=90&language=en) at the Finnair shop (a value of whoppin' 46 euros for 16100 points).

Edit: looking at the delivery costs, you'd better buy something really cheap in order to have points left to pay for postage.

Oh, and welcome to FT!

You can use 10K points to upgrade a one-way European flight (or even less for an intra-Scandinavia one) - that's the best value there is.l

If you have under-18 kids, intra-Scandinavian r/t is 10k points.

Intra-EU o/w upg is also 10k

I think Hertz upg voucher (?) is 10k

I've never used F+ points for hotel vouchers but would actually be interested in hearing if there is any value in that? I might consider using some in Germany if it is possible.

You can exchange AY+ points to Priority Club (PC) points at 2:1 (not a great rate) and use those points at any ICHG property (Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, etc) worldwide (also in Germany) The cherry on top of the cake is that points thus transferred actually count towards PC status :)

I haven't used the hotel award certs, but I seem to remember that they are mostly for domestic hotels

Thank you for your suggestions. I don't usually fly intra Europe, so the upgrade would not really be an option. I think might use them either for a lounge access at HEL (8,000 points) or Wine Bar certificates at the same airport (8,000 for a plate of tapas and a glass of a house wine. Or two glasses of a sparkling wine instead). What do you think would be a better choice? I just can't see wasting any more miles for this program. Even if I reach 20,000 there're still no reasonable redeeming options for me.

I would not recommend either choice too much. The "tapas" in that particular wine bar do not seem to be too interesting and the SSP run longhaul lounge is nothing special. You won't get access to the new ViaHelsinki lounge with F+ points AFAIK.

Well, the ICHG hotel vouchers seem to be 20.000 points each as WilcoRoger mentioned. I dug a bit deeper into this and it looks liike taking between 1-2 months for the whole process so it's only usable for trips planned well in advance.

I used this option once - I told the AY+ service lady that I need those points transferred asap. Lo and behold, within a week they were on my PC account.

I was in a similar situation this spring, with some FP points to burn before they expire (and I don't plan on earning any more in this hard-to-earn, nowhere-to-burn programme).

To AY's credit, after a phonecall they were quick to issue a voucher for a hotel which I got in the post the same week.
