Budget - Cheaper to rent a car in Maui than Phoenix?

Hello, I will be attending a conference in Nov from 11/10 to 11/16 in Mesa, Arizona and from Arizona will be going to Maui from 11/16 to 11/23. I booked a full size car in Maui for $235 total for the 6 days. When I tried to book the car in Phoenix, the rates are consistantly over $350, the fees and taxes are more than $125, I think the rates are too high!

Since the conference is in Mesa, I will need transportation to/from PHX airport and I would like to have a car to do some sightseeing during my break and down time from the conference.

I have never booked a car through Hotwire or Priceline, do you think the rates would be cheaper? Calling Budgets 800 line only gets me the same rate even with my AAA or BJ's discount. Does anyone have any suggestions?
