Star Alliance - Best program for light FF-UA/CO/LH?

Hello all, I'm a total noob here to the site and also kind of uncertain about mileage programs.

I am a student who travels back and forth between Europe probably 2-3 times a year and take a handful of domestic and inter-European flights annually, so obviously I am not going to be accruing enough to qualify for the upper-echelons of FF programs.

Currently, I have a M&M account that I am fairly unsatisfied with considering when I went to book a flight BRU>LHR, the taxes were around $250 (more than the flight itself).

Basically, I want to open a credit card with either United or Continental and use the miles that I accrue to take one or two domestic or inter-European flights a year...I just don't want to empty my pocket doing so!

I did search Continental's online booking system (impressive that they just joined *A and they're already up!) and it looked like around $75 for a BRU>LHR flight which is doable; however, the only direct flights I was seeing were with United (which is seasonal) and Brussels Airlines was not shown. I guess those flights could be booked on the phone?

Anyway, any insight would be great!
Thanks!

Welcome to FT!

Brussels airline is not part of Star Alliance yet this is why you can't book them. Once they join, they will be available.

Redeeming miles for economy flights is usually a bad usage anyway. But CO might be a good program for you with low taxes and relatively easy qualification for *G. You might be able to get to status with them.
