I can't seem to get a straight answer from AA or CX on this- hoping someone has some experience to share.

I'm a AA PLT flying ORD-NRT(AA)-HKG(AA/CX), spending a few days in HKG, then HKG-TPE(CX), a few more days, and then TPE-NRT(JL/AA)-ORD(AA). My entire trip was booked via AA and I have a single Record Locator / PNR for it.

The problem is that I need to bring some extra gear with me and I will likely be over the 20kg allowance CX offers.

Will I run into trouble on my HKG-TPE leg? Will CX let my OW Sapphire status get me the extra 15kg allowance they offer their folks? Or does my single AA booking let me take more?

Thanks!

If it's all on the same ticket (as you suggested), you should be allowed 23kg*2pieces all the way through.

Your cabin will matter, too. IME, CX is pretty flexible if you're in a premium cabin, but I doubt that your OW status will really matter.

Yes, cabin matters the most. As an OW SA, if your luggage slightly exceeds the limit, you may be able to convince the check-in agent to accept it.

I have a different experience that may shed some lights.

I flew HKG --> CTS --> HND // NRT --> HKG in summer with redemption J booking, while there's no J for CTS --> HND, I sit in Y but the weight limit is still 30 KG

while my friend, on redemption Y, flew HKG --> HND --> CTS --> HND // NRT --> HKG, he got 20KG all the way as well (which for JAL domestic Y baggage limit is 10KG or 15KG)

Just for future reference in case someone searches for this later, this was indeed the case. I just checked in this leg with my two 35lb bags and they didn't bat an eyelash.

Yes, you only checked in two bags of 16kg each. Your itinerary allows a much higher limit.

That's because the ticket contains international sectors and therefore domestic sector limit will be the same as the international ones. But if you buy a separate domestic tickets, both of you will get the same JAL domestic limit.

FWIW, I generally find that if you can show one section of atrip is subject to a higher "piece" limit, you can get other airlines to allow the higher limit, even where your are travelling on separate tickets for different portions. I take a lot of trips hauling diving and u/w photo equipment, so lots of weight. Last summer, we flew SAN-LAX-SFO-HKG-CNS-SYD-HKG-SFO/SJC-SAN on a oneworld award in J. CX had a 2 x 32 kg limit while AA had a 2 x 50lb limit. AA allowed us the 2 x 32 kg. We then flew PX on a paid discount fare from CNS to Port Moresby and Hoskins. The baggage dragons from QF who run the PX desk in CNS let us have the transpacific piece limit by showing our itinerary was a continuation of the international flight. I've had the same experience transferring from CX on an AA award to SilkAir on a paid Y fare, etc.
