This may seem a no-brainer...

I have two options for getting Asia>USA on my next trip... I can enjoy SQ's BIG C seat again.. OR... give UA's new C a try...

I realise the SQ flight is objectively almost certainly better in (every) way.. then again, I like to try "new" airlines/aircraft ... and it is after all a proper flat seat....

Am I completely nuts for thinking about trying UA long haul???

Personally, I think SQ is massively overrated. I would definitely go for the better seat on UA.

I did SYD-SFO on UA with the new C seat and I loved it. And even the service was better than I expected after hearing so much 'dirt' about UA. Actually, the service was better than the one on SFO-FRA on LH, again in C.
SQ will IMHO be more expensive, so I would go for UA.

UA C is much better than SQ considering the price, even comfort.

Personally i would prefer the SQ seat for sleeping. Flat, much more space, more privacy.
Nuts: yes, warm nuts on UA.

What a funny bunch of responses, assuming that SQ is more expensive (the reality is that it isnt always) and then suggesting the UA seat is better? What?

Anyway, my 2 cents is that the SQ seat is way wider and I tend to prefer that for lounging and watching TV as well as for sleeping. It's flaw is that it doesnt have many good "in between" settings to sit more upright. The UA seat while better at delivering these in between settings, is much narrower and unless you are on the top deck, the 2-4-2 seating is nowhere near as exclusive or private feeling as the SQ layout. Dont get me wrong, I fly the UA (and similar BA) seats from time to time (and they beat the heck out of those angle flats), but the SQ seat is hard to beat.

On LAX-ICN/NRT/BKK SQ is between A$1000 and A$2000 more than UA. So while this might not be the case all the time, it appears that UA is significantly cheaper most of the time.
I personally prefer even most sloped seats to the SQ seat. Yes, it is very wide but with being wide the seats solves a problem which I don't have. I need a long seat.
I agree, a 2-4-2 configuration doesn't sound great so the OP should try to get a seat on the UD.

I've done a few transpacs on the new UA C and find the seat to be excellent. I'm 6'0" and the bed is comfortable lengthwise and I thought it was plenty wide also. Would have liked to sleep on the plane, but the AVOD is able to keep me entertained all flight. The only drawback when flying UA is crews are hit or miss, as I'm sure with many other carriers. I've had great crews more often than not. No real comparison with SQ, but I'm shocked UA is significantly less expensive. For saving $1000, I would roll with UA on the upper deck.

I second this. Crew can range from brilliant to total crap in any airline. So far, I see most consistency on LH, worst is IMHO TG. Never had bad crew with NG (old Lauda Air) before being taken over by OS, but OS is very reliable too...

To add my few cents worth... I think that SQ is generally overpriced. I fly regularly SYD-FRA and I would much rather fly SYD-SIN(SQ)-SIN-FRA(LH/SQ) than what I do – SYD-BKK(TG)-BKK-FRA(LH). Unfortunately, return C with LH/TG is usually at least A$1,500 cheaper than LH/SQ. Don’t think that the difference between TG/SQ is worth A$1,500. Don’t take me wrong, SQ is much better than TG, but not that much money equivalent...

I like the SQ C seat for sitting but I prefer sleeping on UA's C seat.
The SQ C is really wide...but when I want to sleep. I figure out that it's not long
enough even I am a short guy........

Surprisingly the multi-airline/Multi flight itineraries I am looking at are actually cheaper with SQ on the long haul...

..but I am actually not a huge fan of the "style" of SQ's service... too formal and even "robotic" for my tastes! :D Seat width probably won't bother me... I sleep well in C on NZ... and even in AC's somewhat similar (but narrower) lie flat.

...it's the "flat" bit I'm keenest on!!^

Decisions, decisions! Thanks again for the input folks....

I've been an SQ solitaire for years...i along time. I never thought I would say that I would prefer to fly UA but for the price...the new seat is great on UA. The crews can be hit or miss but honestly they are 8/10 times good. You have to settle for american style banter and humor...which is actually quite entertaining. The service is a bit unrefined but at the end of the day, I can sleep the whole way from LAX to SYD or IAD to GVA and really end up ready to go on the other side for a lot less $$ than SQ. Solitaire has completely lost its value and I will not be renewing this year.
