Star Alliance - Worth it to do *A upgrade (C to F) on LH from SFO to BLR?

Friends,

My wife has an upcoming flight from SFO to BLR (stopping in FRA, I believe).

She is booked in paid business class and I was wondering if it was worthwhile for her to consider upgrading to First, using Star Alliance upgrades with her United miles. The upgrade costs 80,000 miles each way.

Some info about her:

She doesn't drink much alcohol on flights
She is vegetarian
She's about 5'3" with a petite to normal build
She does like to watch movies on the plane

I know the biggest bump is moving from coach to business, as far as flight quality is concerned, with F perhaps giving you a little better food and perhaps a true 180-degree bed vs. the business product.

Based on your flight experiences and the distances between SFO and Bangalore, would you road warriors recommend doing this upgrade for 80k miles each way?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

I wouldnīt spend the miles (or might consider only upgrading the leg she wants to sleep, e.g. SFO-FRA), but then again itīs a matter of personal preference.

Maybe another thing to consider: What is the connection time at FRA?
(If it is a long connection time, spending the time at the FCT/FCL might be very much appreciated by your wife compared to the rather (IMO) pathetic business lounges at FRA)

I would upgrade if she has enough miles. 80k miles for two legs sounds pretty good. Even if your wife is 5'3" and doesn't drink much alcohol on flights C seats are C seats and 22 hours is a long time to spend watching movies.

For watching movies actually C is even better because of the newer and bigger screen.

What!?! In no way is 80,000 miles for a one-way UPGRADE a good deal. Even at half that I would not consider it a good deal (and in fact passed on several opportunities to upgrade a US-India flight from business to first at 40,000 miles).

80,000 miles, even Starnet-restricted UA miles, are worth significantly more when used towards a full award in business or first rather than an upgrade under the Star Alliance Upgrade program. I mean, aren't 80,000 miles almost enough for a business flight US-Europe?

She could do the SFO-FRA on UA instead of LH (the flights are within half an hour of each other) and get a lie-flat biz seat and save 40,000 miles.
