I've started flying Emirates a lot this year out of Melb (to Sin). Probably taken 12+ flights, all via the cheapest fares possible. The deals have been amazing, sometimes as low as A$400 return.
When I started, I used to get frequent emails from Emirates - such as this
Dear XXX,
Don’t miss the opportunity to upgrade your Economy class ticket to Business class on flight EK405 on Sun 12 Jul 09 from Melbourne to Singapore for only AUD 150.00 per person. Gain access to the exclusive airport lounge on departure and enjoy Business Class baggage allowances and priority check-in.
Upgrade now, using your booking reference number abc123, and your surname.
Alternatively, visit Manage a Booking on emirates.com and enter your booking reference: abc123, surname and offer code: 90712405 to upgrade your booking.
All passengers booked on your itinerary will be upgraded and individual upgrades are not possible. The offer is exclusive to you and the passengers on your booking. It is non transferable and is only available on the flight number and date mentioned above.
If you have a connecting Emirates flight, this will remain in the class of travel originally booked.
We look forward to welcoming you onboard.
Upgrade now
Best regards,
Emirates
Important information Flights upgraded from Economy to Business Class using this special offer are ineligible for Chauffeur-drive service and Skywards Miles will accrue at the original ticketed rate. Further Terms and conditions apply.
They dont seem to offering this anymore - despite the J cabin always having light loads. I'm not complaining - because the deals were great when you could get them. Just curious if anyone else has received the same offer and whether or not they are still around.
I've also received 3 comp upgrades out of SIN on the return - but probably due to overbooking in Y than anything else.

When I first read your thread title, my heart jumped thinking they're still doing this.
I'm booked for the same route return in mid November; will keep you posted if I receive a similar offer.

I just tried the offer code; it says "The PNR entered is not eligible for this Offer"
Trying another random number gives "The Offer Code entered is Invalid. Please Check again."

IT seems to me that the offer code is a compound of: YMMDDXXX where
Y: Year
MM: Month of the flight
DD: Flight date
XXX: Flight number
Interesting.

I think EK are smart enough to realise that people (or more likely, savvy FT'ers) would try and work the system and send the code to all and sundry. I too tried the code on several itineraries but alas no...
I think its a smart move by EK to offer this - especially if they are running light loads out of MEL to SIN and any incremental revenue they can generate has to be a good thing, not to mention Skywards loyalty etc.

Edy4eva,
I just (yesterday) got back from this run.
Be aware that EK405 was very lightly loaded (in all classes as far as I could tell) but EK404 on the way back was packed in Economy (if not in Business).
So a bump to Business would be very welcome.
But that being said, it's not the longest leg so take a good book and be patient with the cabin service on the way back
Cheers
Dave

Just doing some of my own calcuations, about $110-$115 USD to upgrade a 3 hour journey. Not too bad, but I am curious to see if they ever do this for ULH flights. Probably low likelyhood, but I guess I can try closer to my departure date. Looks like it is rather last minute (inside a few days).
Oh, look what I found (I guess those who got the email already knew about this link).

I recall someone posting on this forum few months back, flying LAX-DXB who got a similar email, and it was around 300US for that ridiculously long flight.

They do offer the upgrade option for long haul. Took advantage of it earlier this year - FRA-DXB for EUR250....fairly empty cabin J though...I was sent the email approx 48 hours before departure.
But US$300 LAX-DXB is sensational!!

Wouldn't surprise that they would do this on flights where the economy is oversold. This way at least get some money from upgrades instead of randomly upgrading at the check in/gate.

The upgrade is now $175AU. Got the offer this morning and said yes please. Not bad for a $400 fare return.

I recieved a similar offer in August just before flying MEL-DXB-MAN, the offer was for the MEL-DXB leg, and price was around $800AU as I remember.
I'd already upgraded using points though. Seems their system does not extend to eliminating already upgraded pax from this type of offer.

The loads ex Singapore are now getting busier, especially with EK pushing their promo fares ie A$599 ex MEL to SIN return.
I flew SIN-MEL last night on 404 and checked in early (around 7.30pm) for a 10.25pm departure. Was booked in Y (on a A$400 rt fare I might add). Received an Op-up - gate agent (who is contract employee and not EK staff) told me upgrade was due to my Gold status and the flight being fairly full.
Weird thing is that when I checked the EK website a few hours prior to departure, Y cabin still showed approx 8 seats left. Dont know how accurate this is.
This was the second SIN-MEL op-up I have received in 2-weeks. J cabin was full to the bream.
Its probably the 4th SIN-MEL op-up I have received this year.
I am heading back to SIN this Sunday on 405...anyone who needs a lounge invite, just yell.
