I had prepaid reservation booked few weeks ago, but last week, the credit card used for reservation was lost, so Amex replaced new card with new number.

When I checked in yesterday, I told them the situation since they were not able to pre charge my credit card and switch to different credit card.

At check out today, I asked whether I can use my gift card for payment, they told me no, the rate is too low for gift card. I can use any credit card, but just not gift card.

My question is since they did not charge my card before arrival, why didn't let me use gift card at check out.

Did your rate require use of an Amex card?

I think they could have accepted the gift card if they wanted to, but are within their rights in asking that you pay with a cc.

Last weekend I used a 2NT100 cert at a Hyatt Place on a two night prepaid rate. They only charged me what I owed after deducting the cert. (which was less than one night's rate). I assume they didn't charge me when I made the reservation (which I made through the Diamond line).

Wouldn't it be better for the hotel to not have to pay the cc fee?

Possibly the transaction fee the hotel has to pay to accept the gift card is higher than the transaction fee the hotel has to pay to accept just a CC. ;)

Haha, yes maybe. If so, that wouldn't make me happy if I was the owner of the hotel. :)
