Hello!

I've searched the heck out of Google and can't seem to get a straight answer (nor can I the two times I've called BD and gotten two different answers), so I thought I'd finally de-lurk and ask the lovely folks here at FT. I apologize in advance if this has already been covered elsewhere, and please feel free to delete/move as necessary. Like I said, newbie here :)

I booked a BD ticket for December, GLA-LHR-IAD. The GLA-LHR segment is a BD flight, while LHR-IAD is on Virgin.

Here's my question though: my ticket is a BD ticket, with a BD flight number for the Virgin flight, which is all fine and standard. But where do I fall for baggage? I realize that everyone's going to tell me to not be a moron and just look at the online baggage policy, except that hasn't quite answered my question, and since I got two different answers from two different BD reps, I wanted to double check. (Pluuuuuus, the website says for non-bmi and codeshare flights, excess baggage applies, and to contact their reservation center.)

BD's policy is a tough one, with only 20 kgs allowed. Virgin gives me two bags of 23 kgs each for free (I'm still under their old policy). I need to check a third bag (am moving back to the US, I'm not a packrat!), and am prepared to pay the $150 fee Virgin charges for it.

However, one rep told me that because I'm booked through BD (and not through VS, codesharing with BD), for the GLA-LHR segment, I have to follow BD's baggage policy, which means upon check in, I'm likely to have to shell out $600+ for the second and third bags (since they charge £8 per excess kg). But then a second rep (I called back to confirm) told me that BD will honor VS's luggage policy for BOTH flights.

I fly this route pretty frequently, but usually am booked through UA, and so I'm used to falling under their rules for baggage. I've never actually been ticketed through BD, and didn't even think twice about it until that first rep freaked me out completely and said that I WOULD have to follow the BD baggage rules for the first leg of the trip.

I realize this seems like a ridiculously silly question and makes me seem like a novice flyer, but I'm terrified of them charging me the $600+ when I go to check in at GLA. I'm willing to swallow my pride to ask the dumb question here because such a large amount of money is at stake! Thanks in advance!

The accepted standard is that the greater baggage allowance is what counts (the codeshare doesn't matter) - so therefore you should get the VS allowance.

Hi,

Welcome to flyertalk!:)

The greater baggage allowance should count ( ie VS's).

I can't guarantee that my reasoning will work - but BD does not have a bagage policy to the US as they don't fly there. As you're on a single ticket the highest allowance will be there for the entire trip. So I am 99% sure that if you would check in 2 bags you won't have to pay anything.

The third bag I'm not really sure about - logic would dictate that you have to pay VS's fee. Whether BD at GLA is even able to charge that is another question.

Thanks for the replies and help!

@frankvb: the third bag is also a concern; I'm again worried that BD will charge me for it and then I'll have to additionally pay VS.

This is what I get for seeing a ridiculously low fare and booking without actually thinking it through...
