I had to fly back from Canada in September and SQ thought that had a bereavement discount as I heard from a friend that they had a relative who had gone through the same. I booked online and emailed after the fact like I had with other airlines before but SQ advised they don't offer any bereavement discount. Has anyone received bereavement re-reimbursement from SQ?

No they don't, and you will find few airlines doing so these days.

Most airlines in North America provide such discounts, I guess SQ is not as understanding. I had to go either way, but would've been nice to receive a discount since I booked within hours of having to fly out.

Yes, but all of them require approval in advance of travel, although documentary proof can be provided later.@:-) I have never heard of any airlines provide retroactive discount after travel completion.

I provided the documents after (who ever has a death certificate at the time of booking?) but SQ stated they have no bereavement policy.

Please re-read my post. For US airlines which provide bereavement fares, it must be approved in advance with supporting documents furnished later. It appears that you did't seek prior approval. I don't know if SQ has bereavement policy but even for airlines who do, you must seek advance approval.

Not true, over the past few years I have submitted after the fact 2-3 times without anything in advance and always received 10-30% back.

Then, you should stick to your favorite airlines instead of SQ.:)

I am more familiar with UA policy. They must be booked in advance into a specific class and fare code.

Again, I don't know if SQ even has a bereavement policy.

The underlined sentence should have told you otherwise.. you THOUGHT and you heard it from a friend of a relative who had gone through the same....

How did you know that the friend didn't buy it from a travel agent who might had been misinformed that the special discounted consolidator fare was a special bereavement fare?

You didn't verify this with SQ, and really shouldn't expect anything. As others said, if you had asked SQ in the first place, you might at least have known what to expect.. But in any case, SQ stopped flying from YVR in Sept so where did you fly from in the end?

Many North American carriers only offer bereavement fares based on full Y fares within North America. Very few international carriers offer it on their long haul international routes. SQ for example does not even offer any bereavement fares ex-SIN to anywhere else so why should they offer it from Canada?

You have made many incorrect assumptions, not sure why you are a Moderator anywhere in this forum as you have made a posting that provided no valid information and failed to answer the question posted. :td::td::td:

First off, your entire posting in its entirety before the question is rather confusing. Perhaps better wordings might have helped.

From what I looked at your post, especially the line here:

I had to fly back from Canada in September and SQ thought that had a bereavement discount as I heard from a friend that they had a relative who had gone through the same.

1. Is this your own thought or SQ's Agents' thought?
2. When you say "relative who had gone through the same" in what respects are you implying? Is it the reservation process, or what?

To answer your question, I have never had any bereavements of any kind from SQ and I have flown with them a lot in either Y, C, and F.

You have made many incorrect assumptions, not sure why you are a Moderator anywhere in this forum as you have made a posting that provided no valid information and failed to answer the question posted. :td::td::td:

The mod is asking valid questions, and he made his points very clearly.. As long as it is related to the topic, every post is valid.

You have made many incorrect assumptions...

Please clarify what were incorrect assumptions.

I would love to know the name of your airlines who will provide 10-30% rebate after the fact. Was it for any F/C/Y fares?

Thanks General_Flyer, when a read over my first post you are correct that 'me no use good English'! I appreciate your thoughts, it's unfortunately that SQ doesn't provide a discount but I wasn't holding my breath nor was counting on any money: it would've merely been a nice bonus to receive a refund as I needed to go either way. The moderator may have been clear in his points; however, all were, mostly incorrect, assumptions that didn't actually make sense nor were they of relevance (i.e. SQ may have stopped flying their own plane out of YVR but surprisingly the world didn't come to an end as they have this miraculous ability for me to book flights through their website from YVR to SIN. Somehow they are able to make connections using other airlines, sure is mind boggling and very high tech how they do things these days!!! And processing everything over this thing called the 'internet' is amazing.).

1. Yes SQ stopped physically flying to YVR so you bought a ticket that routed you via the US on another carrier which would make it even more complicated in getting a bereavement fare. Why didn't you buy from an airline that offered services to SIN via their homebase, ie BR, CI, JL, KE, CX?

2. You had assumed through your grapevine that such a policy existed. (past). But fares change everyday. You should have called SQ to verify before you booked your fare - online or otherwise. There is still a TA in Vancouver that offered SQ consolidator fares and they might have been able to match or even better the offer the fare you got thru SQ.

3. I do not need to make assumptions .. cos I know as I was a TA based in YVR.

4. It is also against FT policy to question / criticise a Moderator. But I was not acting as a Moderator anyway when I answered your question. Just a FT member providing facts. You just didn't like what you read.
