Looking at earning some cheap/easy miles with UA, it Swiss site shows a connection in ZRH via Swiss Railways. They say you get a boarding pass in LHR and can use it as the train ticket.

Anyone done this?

(1) If I book a J ticket, do I get 1st on the train?
(2) Would the Swiss segment count for miles

Thanks in advance.

(1) Yes, J ticket means 1st on the train
(2) Your J ticket gives you 1500 miles :)

Are you sure that UA will not argue that SBB is not a Star Alliance carrier? Simply remember that they refuse to credit LH flight on Eurowings et al.

You may indeed be right, I have only done this on LX tickets. Of course there is the one remaining genuine flight late in the evening, for guaranteed miles...

That was my concern! I need 1500 EQMs with United so four segments will do it, but two will not! I will keep looking for options.

I used the Flugzug couple of times in the last two years and LX never, not once, managed to get the miles credited to my account. It always took me several months to get these miles, and I never succeeded if I requested them electronically or with the paper form through Kassel. I only succeeded by sending complaints to CR including the electronic ticket data...:td:

Things are getting even more compilicated if your travelling ZDH-ZRH-USA as you will not be able to print out a boarding pass for the first leg through web checkin.

Would be nice if LX would be a little more customer friendly in this regard...

Anyway, to get back to the OP: I wouldn't rely on getting any miles from the Flugzug segment, better use the late ZRH-BSL flight to be sure you're getting what you deserve...

I did this two times this year (last time 3 weeks ago) and was always able to check in online and print the boarding passes without a problem. You get 3 pages, page 1: boarding pass ZDH-ZRH / page 2: boarding pass ZDH-ZRH "Airport Copy" / page 3: "online check in confirmation" / "not a boarding pass" for ZRH-USA to check in in person in ZRH.

But I can confirm the ongoing problems with getting the miles for the train segments in the end... Of my last trip, only one leg has been credited after using the online claim form, the other is still "being verified by partner"...
