Hello,
I now live in Melbourne and having browsed the forums for a while I am looking at the prospect of mileage running. I know that many mileage runs have some sort of connection to the US - however I am looking at doing some that are in some way associated with Australia.
Do you chaps have any advice with regard to doing it, TO/FROM/WITHIN Australia?

Standard questions.
What program/alliance?
What status do you hold, and which status are you hoping to reach/maintain?
How many miles/status credits/tier points, etc. do you need?
Where in Australia are you starting from? It's rather a big place, after all...

Starting in Melbourne, currently Platinum with AA.
I think while looking for a few miles here and there the allure of a few very cheap trips which combine the od tourist sight/new cities and a few miles is quite appealing.
I am prepared to fly anywhere to be honest.

Hi 747-444, if you look (as I guess you have already) on the Qantas forum, you will find some discussion of fares from time to time which can help for status runs.
I suppose whenever there is a good reason, QF might bring out some better than usual fares for some routes (to make life difficult for the other three airlines) and these could be almost MR-worthy.
Sadly, the best fares on QF are usually those TO, not from Australia, so consider fares 'to Australia' as options, e.g. the recent very cheap Europe-Australia fare mentioned on the OzFest thread in CommunityBuzz.
I hope this is a good start; there are some really, really helpful and knowledgeable people in Australia on the QF and AA forums, so that's one option (in addition to other forums, local fare comparison websites etc, to help stay abreast of sales and hopefully the occasional lowball or mistake fares).
Best of luck and keep an eye on what's discussed by locals who are after that extra mileage/status for 2009...

[PS. mod hat on for a moment - MR 'Deals' forum is only for sharing 'Deals'; I moved this to MR 'Discussion' - though technically it's a discussion of something nebulous rather than a particular fare! Check the sticky thread in MR Deals - it has this all set out.]
