Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Scuba diving the barrier reef

We're looking to dive at the reef. We're staying in Port Douglas and Mission Beach. Which is the better location for diving, and can anyone suggest a good company to go with?

We were in Port Douglas a couple of months ago (in late August) and my husband did two 1-day dive trips... one trip with Calypso and one with Poseidon. We had read recommendations for both companies (for single-day dive trips). While my husband enjoyed both companies, he enjoyed the experience with Calypso the most.

I went on the Calypso trip too, as a snorkeler, and had a great day. I thought the staff was excellent. I did not go on the Poseidon trip.

When we return, we will do a 3-night liveaboard trip instead... on the Spirit of Freedom out of Cairns.
