Well all you lucky BA people, I am travelling to JFK with my wife and son, alas not on BA, so we are in the Sky Team lounge at T4 and there's no champagne before 5pm! Hopefully KLM will have it on the plane.
Next time I see anyone moaning about BA, I'll remind them of the Champagne embargo!:(

It's still a decent lounge (particularly by SkyTeam standards), just seems you have to fly BA if you want a reliable source of champagne in the lounge. Although I did see some cheap champagne in KLM's lounge in AMS (used to be cava, but was actually champagne during my last visit).

We are going via AMS, so maybe we'll have time for a glass, there. I assume we can have some on KLM?

Good question, I know AF has (or at least had - don't fly them too often anymore) champagne in all classes.
KLM I'm not sure, I tend to drink beer on the plane and I've never asked for champagne on KLM. I'm fairly sure whatever sparkling stuff they offer (whether it turns out to be champagne, cava, prosecco, etc) is only available in C.
I'd be interested if they still have the champagne in the lounge and what type it is. They do have proper glasses in the lounges, which is more than I can say for Air France! (the only AF lounge I'd rate highly is their F lounge, which is very good, certainly better than their on-board product).

Yes, they do have glasses and a good selection of wines and spirits, plus a varied selection of hot and cold snacks. It is a very comfortable lounge, with excellent massage chairs and an oxygen bar, but no fizz before 5pm.

There is cheap champagne at KLM Crown Lounge in AMS (at least in the Schengen Lounge used by LOT for its Star Gold members) and there is also quite good champagne (sorry - I forgot the brands) at AF Lounges in PAR (which I have used flying with VN CDG-SGN in Business Class).

Have I missed the secret Champagne hiding spots? My last four trips through LHR T5, in the business class lounge, I've not seen champagne.
SkyTeam doesn't have a first lounge (right?), so 5p.m. onwards isn't so terrible.

In BA Business Class lounges, Champagne is on request.

Is that a sarcastic smiley by any chance or a humorous one? Thing is, I would expect Champagne in ANY first lounge, wherever you may be.
I myself have yet to experience the pleasures of F but when (and if) I do, I would like to think that Champagne would be a basic requisite.
Edit; I notice the OP doesn't specify whether he is in F and my response is assuming he is, so apologies if not!

I was actually surprised as well recently flying Delta to Atlanta in Business Elite that they didn't have champagne in the Sky Team lounge.
However the skyteam lounge (once the Concorde room) is very nice - I was surprised. The food was good.
However I don't understand why they chose 5pm to bring the champagne out?
It is never too early for champagne! :)
Times like this it was handy to pop into the BA lounge using Open Doors with my Gold card - Catier champagne was the choice of the day which slipped down nicely.

I don't believe that it is a 1st class lounge

Edit; I notice the OP doesn't specify whether he is in F and my response is assuming he is, so apologies if not!No ST airline offers 1st class out of T4. The only ST airline with first class flights from LHR is KE and they fly from T3.
As to KL, which the OP is flying, they do not offer 1st class anywhere, period. What they offer out of LHR is economy and, um, "Europe Select" which they themselves admit is not even business class.

A thread in the BA forum moaning about the lack of champagne in some second-world style lounge on a third-world style FF programme. What is the first-world coming to?

Yep if I had a choice of supplying oxygen or champagne I would choose the champagne anytime.;)
