Happy Oct 22, 09, 12:04 pm Has anyone been successful getting an spg amex renewal fee waived so as to not have to apply for a new card with first year free? Try to ask the question in AMEX forum you may get more feedbacks. jeelele Oct 22, 09, 8:41 pm Highly unlikely, virtually impossible. They used to do it in the past if threatened to close the account. Not anymore. Not in the current environment. Infact, without any further questions, they will quickly jump and close your account. Be prepared for this. estnet Oct 22, 09, 9:57 pm This is what I was afraid of - always had some kind of concession made before but this time they just kept saying "it's non negotiable".... If I hadn't just charged a large amount which I am afraid I would lose points for I would just cancel - no question. Now I have to decide if it's worth forfeiting the points. Do they do pro-rated refunds of yearly fee? estnet Oct 22, 09, 10:00 pm Happy - the reason I asked here is that the other forum seems to be for amex membership rewards and this is an spg card not giving membership points. They discuss more on the AMEX inhouse cards, but they also discuss the SPG cards. Actually come to think about it, the SPG forum could be a good place to ask your question as well. yyyccclll Oct 23, 09, 3:23 pm Has anyone been successful getting an spg amex renewal fee waived so as to not have to apply for a new card with first year free? When renewal fees were posted last month, I called Amex to cancel. The agent asked me the reason. Since Amex just gave me only 8k credit line, I told him I was not happy about the line and wanted to close. Have been paid bills on time (or in advance) with average balance of 9k+ each month. Due to the policy, the agent still cannot increase the line but he offered to waive the fees for me. I said OK. pawtim Oct 23, 09, 7:09 pm Too bad -- I'm going to face question this in about 7 weeks. Seems like SPG Amex is starting a lot of personal cards (including mine) at $2k CL...tripled after 6 mos.; I wanted to see if they'd triple it 6 mos. later, but I'm not interested in paying an annual fee. (I have to admit to mistakenly getting an SPG biz card without realizing that the fee was not waived first year...anyway, now I have that one to use for a while b5 I have no SPG cards.) jeelele Oct 24, 09, 1:01 pm When renewal fees were posted last month, I called Amex to cancel. So far, you are the only one I am hearing this from. Have known several people with various flavors of AMEX issued cards but none of them have been successful in getting the fee waived this year. Most of them are with immaculate records. May be, things are losening up a bit at AMEX. WMPA Oct 25, 09, 7:47 pm While I don't like paying money if I don't have to, I don't mind paying the $45 per year to be able to get thousands of Starpoints when I am not staying at a Starwood hotel. I've never asked American Express for a waiver on the SPG card, because even if AmEx doesn't know it, I know I am not going to cancel the card any time soon. Your mileage may vary. jayzee9 Oct 26, 09, 10:40 am I called the other day to get my fee waived. I spoke with retentions and he was unable to do it after putting me on hold for a few minutes. I spoke to his supervisor after going back and forth she put me on hold and was able to issue a one-time $40 credit. She told me that I would not get this on any other products or ever again. That's what they usually say but maybe they meant it this time. SPG Business Card, 67k annual spend. BrianV Oct 26, 09, 12:03 pm I called to take myself off that free for the first year appointment book, $70 after since I was just charged some $70. The CA kindly took me off the promotion and refunded my $70 charge and told me to keep it as a gift from Amex. I told her out the gate I wasn't looking for a refund, just wanted to not get charged next year. She refunded it anyways. You never know what will happen, but always be prepared to follow through. You can always resign up, get a free year and bonus points. I think my situation is because I've been a heavy $50+k spender for 4 years straight on the same Amex SPG card (FWIW, $30k CL, started out around $4k when I got the card 5 years ago). |
