Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Tomato juice consumption - more inflight?

Reading the "air pollution" thread made me think of something...why does it seem that people like to drink Tomato Juice in flight?

Tomato juice is one of those drinks that I rarely see people drink on the ground, but when inflight, I see so many people request it. What is it about flying that makes people want to drink Tomato juice??

I have this question in my mind too for a long long time...I had exactly the same observation but could never figure out why...

I am this person!!! I can't explain why - I almost never drink it on the ground. Literally, maybe I will have a V8 once a year. But in flight, I often have a craving for tomato juice when the drink cart comes around. I usually find it hard to drink an entire can of soda during a flight, but the tomato juice I just guzzle down. I have no explanation for it. And although the sodium content is terrible, it always make me feel like I am having something that is good for me ;)

My best guess is it's because "JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN!" @:-) :)

Depending on my mood, it's number two or three on the list after Coke Zero or Cranberry Juice Cocktail with Vodka.

Here are a couple of reasons:

1) FILLING -- It's a very filling drink. So say you're on a flight that's just long enough for you to get hungry but not so long that you get a meal on the flight or want to purchase something, it fits in great as something to tide you over! ^

2) ECONOMICAL -- For awhile when some airlines were charging for drinks, it seemed like more bang-for-your buck. I mean, $2 for a Coke is highway robbery, but $2 for tomato juice seems almost reasonable.

3) BRANDING -- If you're not sure whether it's a Coke or Pepsi flight, you might start thinking, I'll have some kind of juice. This leads you to eliminate your standard Orange, Apple, etc. Finally it dings in your head... TOMATO! Airlines always have tomato juice. You know what, I'll have one.

Just a few rambling thoughts... hehehe

I do this exact thing. I never drink it unless I'm on a plane. For me, the first time I tried it was on a plane, and now it's like a ritual. I think I associate drinking tomato juice with traveling, and a flight without tomato juice just isn't as much fun.

Same habits here, it seems. One Hong Kong friend normally starts dinners with me by ordering us bloody mary's but otherwise it's purely on board consumption.

Great observation!

I never, ever drink Perrier water on the ground but I can't get enough of the stuff in-flight. Like the other poster it seems Perrier has become associated with flying and it's not quite the same without some.

I love the Perrier cans in the lounge and inflight. I do drink V8 in the lounge as I feel I don't get enough vitamins when I travel, but I never take Tomato juice onboard.

I'm glad I'm not the only person to have noticed increased tomato juice consumption onboard though.

I never ever had the need to try tomato juice while "on the ground". But last year I got this sudden urge to try it while on a flight between HKG-FRA. I can just say that I won't be trying that again anytime soon... ;)

But yeah I totally agree with the OT, it definitely seems that their is something about that tomato juice ones people get up in the air. :D

Cheers,
Joe

I have to make a few assumptions...

1. If I remember correctly, CX uses carton v8 instead of can v8? The carton is a very large item on the cart and is usually place on the edge of the cart on the top. So when people are sitting down and they turn to the cart, the first thing they will see will be the "V8" sign, while all those little cans and stuff are hidden in the middle surrounded by jugs of water, orange juice, wine.

2. There's a lot of air for sodas, don't want too many farts....

i am also one of those people. It's one of those things that i really don't understand. I don't enjoy it on the ground, while i adore it in the air! with celery salt like AF serves it it's even better!

While you are high up in the air, your taste buds and olfactory buds are less sensitive. Perhaps this explains why people prefer the stronger taste of tomato juice in flight.

Me too! (drinking tomato juice in the air but not on the ground).

For me i like to have it as an alternative to wine with my meal if I'm feeling a bit jaded or tired of alcohol.

Tomato juice has flavour (compared to water) and goes pretty well with stir-fry, beef, chicken, fish.... you name it.

The only thing to watch out for with tomato juice on US carriers is they use all sorts of name brands that are really really high in sodium - like 95 per cent of your day's intake in a single can
