Flying Blue (Air France & KLM) - Amex Flying Blue Gold negative bill=minus miles?

hi, I have the Amex AF Gold Card and I get level miles for every purchase. If my billing statement is 5000 euros, I get 5000 level miles on my FB account a few days after my statement date. Do you know if when you have a negative balance (you got a reimbursement from something and you end your month with -3500 euros for exemple) do you get a -3500 miles in your FB account or do you get 0 ?
Also if you spend 5000 and get a credit of 4000, do you get 1000 miles or 5000 miles (spending or statement amount?)
Thanks!!

Hello Ruben,
the rules are the same for positive and negative balance.
So yes, if you've got a credit of 3500 EUR, you will have a debit of 3500 miles.
Same remark for the AF and Hertz bonus (1,4 factor instead of 1).

NO, Amex do not debit miles on FB. So if you get a negative balance with Amex miles (coz a reimbursement), Amex will carry it until your successive purchase will offset the negative miles balance. In your example where your end-October balance with Amex is a positive 3500 hence a negative miles balance of 3500.Amex will carry that negative miles balance until your expenses cover it. Until that happens you will get a zero cmiles credit on FB.
A word of caution. Amex miles on AF card usually works with a one month lag (actually it is a bit more complicated than that). So if your AMEX billing cycle is the 30th, AMEX will credit to FB around 30 Dec the miles earned on card expenses up to 30 Nov. That means that spending between Nov 30 & Dec 30 will only be credited in January and will not count for 2009 status. Depending on your billing date, you wish to be extra careful.

From my experience, that is absolutely untrue. brunos states right.
Nevertheless, I might have observed a double account on the statement :
- the one of regular level miles (1:1)
- the one of partners (AF/KL, Hertz and Accor Hotels) level miles (1:1.4)
And I do not know how Amex handles a negative balance on the partners account (for example you bought a fully refundable AF ticket you then cancelled).

Hi bodory, I am not sure of the question you really ask, so my answer might be misdirected.
Amex keeps track of miles "exchange rate". So, if you purchase €1000 an AF ticket, it will credit your miles account for 1400 miles. if you reimburse it in a later billing cycle, it will debit 1400 miles (and credit €1000). That has happened to me a few times.

the thing to do is to pay with Amex and get the refund on another card they are a few places where it works ;)

May you provide more information? I know for instance SNCF (French rail) does not allow anymore to do this.
