Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs - Uh-oh....luggage issue on Virgin Blue!

I booked a flight from OOL to SYD in November.

I'm getting all of my information together and I want to verify the luggage restrictions. I purchased a bag allowance for $8 each for our checked luggage.

We will both have carry-ons as well as we will be in Australia for 14 days.

I see this on their website:
-----------------------------
Carry-on Baggage
What’s allowed
You may take, free of charge, baggage weighing up to 7 kg on board with you, which might consist of:

1 piece not exceeding dimensions of 23 cm in depth, 34 cm in height and 48 cm in length, (total linear dimensions equal to 105cm), and;
1 suit pack or garment bag, non rigid/unfolded not exceeding 11cm in depth x 60cm in width x 114cm in length (total linear dimensions equal to 185 cm), or another small bag or briefcase
In addition these items are allowed

Laptop computer, a handbag, pocketbook or purse
An overcoat, wrap or blanket
An umbrella without metal points, or walking stick
A small camera or pair of binoculars
Infants’ food for consumption in flight
A pair of crutches or prosthetic devices for your use, provided that you are dependant on them for mobility
----------------------------------

According to my converter, 7 kg is just over 15 lbs...? Yikes! Heck, the carry on back alone weighs 7 lbs. What kind of carry on luggage only weighs 15 lbs.

Am I reading this correctly? I am pretty sure the carry on will weigh more like 30 lbs....doesn't take much to weigh 30 lbs considering the weight of the carry on itself.

Am I missing something or are we going to really pay extra....I don't think checking two bags each was even an option.

Is this a puddle jumper?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

First minor snafu....(Qantas was SO generous--allowing 2 50 lb. bags each...wasn't thinking it would be such a difference).

For comparison:
QF - carry on baggage is 7kg per piece
NZ - carry on baggage is 7kg per piece
SQ - carry on baggage is 7kg per piece

And the checked baggage allowance is up to 23 kg, not number of pieces.

Yep, 7kg is the limit. You may get away with a little more than this. It is not unheard of for them to weigh rollaboard cases, but probably is less likely to have a backpack weighed. It's a fact of life in this part of the world. Jetstar is slightly more generous with a 10kg allowance.

I don't know what it is like now they are charging for checked luggage, but before they did the upside was that on most routes at most times of the day you could still find space in the overhead lockers for carry on luggage, even if you boarded 10-15 mins before departure, ie. if you were the last to board. The exception being mainline business routes (ie SYD-MEL) at peak times.

Yup 7kg is the limit for carry on.

If you pre purchased baggage, then you both have 23kg to play with which IMHO is more than enough for a 14 day vacation.

Unlike in the USA, baggage is charged upon weigh not pieces. So you could have 5 pieces to check in as long as the TOTAL weight is no more than 23kg.

If it goes over 23kg then it is charged at $10 per kilo for QF and DJ (not sure about JQ).

I would ensure the carry on is only 7kg's as if it is weighed (common now that baggae is an extra) then you would also have to check that bag at the counter/gate/ whcih may then take you over your 23kg limit.

I appreciate that you believe that one large suitcase for each of us should suffice, but my husband is a habitual overpacker--way worse than any female I know!

Regardless, we just weighed my carry-on. The carry-on has nothing more than a toiletry bag in it...no clothes, no shoes, no nothing. It weighs 16.5 pounds without anything in it....what type of carry on luggage weighs 7 kg? they must really mean a "purse," or a "camera bag," not actually meaning to refer to a "carry on" piece of luggage.

I think knowing that we can't go over the 23 kgs may be the key though because neither one of our larger suitcases is actually 23 kgs. So that may be the ticket.

I do pack pretty light, at least I think so. But hubby will bring a couple pairs of dockers (anniversary dinner, etc.), the weather is going to be spring-like and we're told to bring sweaters (Australia)....a couple pairs of shorts, jeans, and a few tops and all the toiletries....it doesn't take much to add up to 23 kg in a suitcase. Plus I run pretty much every day so I need my running shoes....at least 3 or 4 days worth of running gear, although not much more because we always find washer/dryers to do a load of laundry (I have to....when I'm done running, my clothes and headband is soaked)...

I need to go and read the website again to see if I can bring my laptop also....or if that counts as the carry-on.

I don't care if we get charged--we'll pay what we need to pay--this will be the only leg of our trip that we'll have to worry about (going home, Qantas will allow us two 23 kgs checked luggage each)....I just worry about them flat out saying "NO.....you can't take that much with you," then we are in trouble.

Thanks.

Laptops and handbags are not counted in the 7kg, so make sure your laptop is OUT of the carry on bag.

Is your Qantas domestic flight on the same itenary as your international QF flight? If so that allowance is correct. If seperate PNR's they may revert to the domestic rule of 23kg check in and 7 kg carry on also.

My husband just had to go back home (Canada) for a funeral and purchased new luggage. It is very nice...on the lighter side as well. I thought the carry-on looked a tad small...but I suspected it was the new "regulation" size. I just measured it. It is exactly what the description on the website allows for....."1 piece not exceeding dimensions of 23 cm (9 in) in depth, 34 (13 in) cm in height and 48 cm (19) in length." I just weighed it.....it weighs 9 lbs. without anything in it. Mine is just a tad larger in that it is 21 in in length. But it weighs more because it is not a brand new piece of luggage.

I'll figure something out.

Our international flight starts in SFO, ends when we get to SYD and picks up internationally again when we leave to go home from SYD two weeks later.

So, you are correct. The Qantas flight we are taking from SYD to Brisbane has the same weight restrictions.....
-------------------------------------
Australian Domestic All Classes:
2 x 105cm (41in) bags or
1 x 105cm (41in) bag plus 1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag or
1 x 115cm (45in) bag 7kg (15lb) per piece
---------------------------------------

What in the world is a 41 in bag? According to the above information, we can carry on 2 41 in bags, OR, 1 41 in bag + 1 73 inch garmet bag OR 1 45 in bag. What kind of bags are these folks talking about (I understand the garmet bag).

And I still don't think even Lee's brand new sparkly perfectly sized carry on will be 7 kgs even if he barely puts anything in there....

Oh well...at least we'll have gone through this drill by the time we fly out of OOL on Virgin Blue.

And yah, I know to take my laptop out....I travel for business (but I never have this much luggage--obviously!).

What in the world is a 41 in bag?

This means total linear dimensions (length + width + height/depth) cannot exceed 41".

If you keep reading down that same Qantas baggage page, you'll see a handy table that shows the maximum lengths, heights and depths to give you 41" and 45" in external dimensions.

OOL is a very friendly airport and it's highly unlikely you'll be troubled about the carry-on.

The only possible place it could be weighed is at the checkin counters, and you could take it in turns to check in/drop bags while the other keeps the heavier carry-ons at a safe distance.

Security doesn't care how much you put through.

Airside, occasionally there's a gimlet-eyed GA looking for outside rollaboards, but they're unconcerned about the weight: as long as it fits in the sizer you're ok - you can even take a few things out if they make you put it in the sizer, and put them back afterwards !

And on the plane from OOL there's always plenty of room in the overhead bins as most pax are holidaymakers with little carry-on.

I think this is what the airlines are aiming for thesedays - trying to get as little carry-on luggage as possible.
They would hope any toiletries (that may be required during the flight) could fit into either a passenger's carry-on bag or their handbag/purse.

I had the challenge recently of trying to stay under the 7kg rule during an overnight stay out of town. Toiletries and a change of clothes just made it on 7kgs.

What on earth are you guys packing? I get under 7kg for week away, including 3 pairs of shoes, a textbook or 2 and full size toiletries. Case weighs 2.4kg I believe.

I flew from Ballina (Byron Gateway) to Sydney on Thurs this week with Virgin Blue. They were weighing most carry on bags at check in.

I was carrying my Tom Bihn Western Flyer as a backpack, they just looked at it and said it was OK. It's well within the carry on dimensions and wasn't fully packed.
