Arrived with a reservation at the PHX Hertz rental car center mid-day on Friday 10/16/09 to find 62 people ahead of me in line and eventually a shouted explanation that it would be at least 1 1/2 hours until cars were available. The explanation was that they had plenty of cars, but not enough staff to get them processed to re-rent. After finally making it to the counter, got a car -- smaller than reserved, but a car -- an hour later. This wasn't a minor shortfall, it was major.
I'm still annoyed. They had a problem all morning, they knew they had a problem all morning, they carefully collect your phone number during the reservations process, and then just as carefully choose not to use it to alert you to a delay. They treat one and a half hours of my time at half a tank of gas (their offered compensation), but charge me $47 an hour for each hour extra after my 2 day rental.
And the Phoenix system for shuttle to the central rental car center is a great example of why I would prefer to not have the government run my healthcare. Buses were jammed with people standing everywhere, and when the bus driver wanted to let some poor schmuck know that he wasn't allowed to stand near the rear exit door, she opened the bus door, hollered for the ground person (supervisor?) to come on board and then had the sup make the announcement. The return bus Sunday afternoon was again jammed, and apparently they were having the bus serve two terminals, with the result that some folks didn't get off where they were supposed to, and someone else's luggage got offloaded at the wrong location. (Though that was fortunately figured out before the bus left.) It doesn't help that the electronic signs indicating what terminals each bus serves are parallel to your exit from the rental car center, not perpendicular, and so are easy to miss. I really don't understand the shoddy service given the incredible facility charges added to each rental. (I would have rented from a city location but there were none that I could find that allowed Sunday evening returns.)
