I'm not a big beef eater, having my last steak on OZ earlier this year, I've always ordered the Korean meal since. I got a bit burned out though so decided have the beef tenderloin steak on my last trip which was in C. It ended up being very good, the best steak I've ever had on a plane, and a huge improvement over the last time I had steak on OZ. Being I don't eat beef often, not sure if it was just me or if anyone else has noticed a big change in the beef? I asked where it was from and the F.A. replied it was Australian beef. I also found the salad to be quite good, also an improvement over the last salad I had. Fruit was as good as always, but the cheese was also improved in my opinion, with the brie being exchanged for a very soft round packaged cheese (sorry I didn't bother to check what type it was). I may have to try the other western dishes on my next trips to see if they've improved also.

That flight was from ICN to the Philippines, but I imagine they serve the same beef on all their ex-ICN flights.

I have always found the beef on OZ to be of relative high quality... I love the 'mixing and harmonising' concept...
Last meal I had in C was delicious -beef that I wrapped in delicious leaves of salad with pepper paste and vegies!
Delicious!

sure you're right. I'm going TO ICN (from LHR) this week, and therefore it won't be Aus beef, I guess.
Form ICN, I usually go for ssam-bap, so may give beef a go instead

Beef is fine if you have bibimbap or Ssam bap, but if you pay attention OP mentioned about the steak OZ had. Steak is also another entree, in addition to the beef mixing in bibimbap or ssam bap.
Ever I had tried once about the steak on OZ has in F, I had given up completely as it was really rubbery, way worst than UA C filet.

You are correct, I was referring to the steak and not the beef as part of the ssambap or bibimbap Korean meals, both of which I like and are quite good. As you, my previous experience with the OZ steak wasn't very good and I figured I wouldn't ever order it again. Hopefully my latest experience wasn't some one-off deal and the better steaks are here to stay. There wasn't anything rubbery at all about my recent steak.

The beef I've had on OZ F from ICN-LAX over the past year has been the best of any airline.

Please be more specific the beef you had as in western steak entree or beef in bibimbap / ssam bap or beef in the chinese option.
I think this had turn into some confusion of the thread, as the problem with beef in OZ basically only limited to the western steak entree.

I took it as the steak- the ssambap/ bibimbap is shreds of beef and has always been fine. However ex ICN the steaks often been excellent in the past, but went downhill recently when I was told it was USDA beef (sorry guys from US, but Aus beef tastes better to me!)

OK - point taken... It is the steak the OP was referring too. If it is Aust beef, for a main course, it will be generally be nice - as we produce pretty good beef. ;)

It also depends how they cook it, good beef falls in the wrong hands doesn't do any good, it would becomes bad anyway. Mine in F was simply overcooked.

True...
If Aussie beef is cooked well and not too 'well done' it is delicious... I liken overcooked beef to a rubber tire - chewy, tough and dry.
It can be touch and go at 35K ft... If the warming ovens etc. are too high this can have a huge impact on the quality.

I swear my steak on OZ was Kobe beef.
It was leaps and bounds above the best Aussie or Argentine beef.

That was also my feeling previously when my steak wasn't very good. In fact I don't think the F.A. even asked me how I wanted it cooked, just they cooked all the steaks the same and that's what you got regardless of how you liked your steak. Now they definitely ask how you want your steak cooked, and of course well-done is a big no-no for steaks.
Also if the previous time I had the steak it was US beef, that also might explain why it wasn't so good. In the past I've spent lots of time living in both the U.S. and Australia, and the only times I ever had a good U.S. beef steak was in very high-end restaurants. Of course everybody's tastes are different so I don't want to get into any debates on which countries beef is best, but for me personally Australian beef is clearly superior.
In regard to Macabus's comment about the OZ steak being like Kobe beef, I wouldn't go quite that far. I was though was very tender and flavorful, certainly better in my opinion than even a standard steak in Australia or Argentina.

For the record, the OZ steak was superior to the kobe beef I had on numerous JL F and NH F flights ex NRT.

In my experience often I have been asked how I want my steak cooked but you get the same result no matter what you order. Bloody or well done will always result in something which looks like medium well.

Same experience here, I was quite shocked they didn't ask at all even being in F ! I was a little tired of bibimbap, so want to try something different, who knows it was a very bad choice.
