Here again are T100 statistics (onboard loads), this time for July. Remember that onboard loads are only half of the picture when trying to estimate financial performance, and don't really say much about fare or traffic composition.

(last month's posting had somewhat more detail about these stats

Because I follow MKE closely and find it to be one of the more interesting places to watch these days, I have highlighted those markets.

And continuing the trends we've been seeing this year, both MKE-BOS and MKE-LGA have fewer passengers this year than last year for AirTran, in spite of increased hub mass in Milwaukee and more connecting feed. And while the economy-related reduced demand is meaningful, Midwest is seeing small year-over-year gains.

MKE-BOS traffic
-15.6% AirTran
+5.8% Midwest

MKE-LGA traffic
-5.4% AirTran (in spite of flying 26.8% more flights in 2009 versus 2008)
+1.9% Midwest

Milwaukee-Washington is a bit different because AirTran double the number of flights, and Midwest cut their glights back slightly and swapped in smaller aircraft on some trips.

MKE-DCA traffic
+75.8% AirTran passengers, on an increase of 101.7% flights over last year
-9.9% Midwest passengers on a decrease of 4.5% (fewer) flights over last year

The Milwaukee markets where AirTran carried strong loads are nearly all ones in which they had zero or sharply reduced competition this year compared to last. Markets with more competition this year showed significantly less traction. With the prospect of restored Midwest and new Southwest competition, it will be interesting to see how things pan out for all involved. Both AirTran and Midwest have the prospect of sginificant feeder traffic (unlike Southwest) if they maintain what they have, but if everyone swims in red ink who knows what will be maintined.
