Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Which flight has New J Seats - How to tell?

I would like to know if there is a way to find out (preferably online) if a flight has a new J seat configuration or old one. Now, it's either a hit or miss.

I need to know so I can pick the particular flight that has the new J. Flying to Singapore on CX can be particularly painful if one opts to stick with CX and end up with the very old seat instead of flying the fancy new J seat of SQ.

A couple of months ago I was flying back to HKG from Saigon and I was surprised when I got into the cabin to find it a new J seating. I'm currently planning to fly the SGN sector again and although I picked the same flight, it looks that it's of an old J seating. :(

Read the sticky, particularly this post (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/11220583-post4.html), that says all that can usefully be said about this question.

On regional flights on CX there are no guarantees of anything except that there will be an economy class and there will be a business class. First is totally unpredictable, as is whether you will get old or new short or long-haul business, or old or new economy.

First, read our FAQ. Second, what are you talking about? You know it's a 3 hour flight right? And if you do a little research at cathaypacific.com coupled with our FAQ, you will discover that most all the flights daily to SIN on CX are the regional seats (aka, not new J), not sure where you're getting the information that a lot of these flights have new J (or will ever have it, for that matter). Even then though, I can't say it's "particularly painful." I would say flying regional J to Sydney would be painful. Flying 3+ hours to Singapore? Um no.

Even if you're flying SQ however, certainly you know that you are hardly guaranteed their new J anyway. Last I checked, most flights you get SQ's old product also, and they replaced their 777-ER with the A380 so there still is only one or two flights a day on SQ with new J.

The best way is just to call and ask.

I was looking at flights from SIN-HKG, and wanted the new J. Long story short, the schedules said EQV, and the particular flight for that day said 773. Called up Cathay, they ensured it was a 33B, even though it said 773. Surely enough, booked the flight and it came up as 33B.

Another way, is to choose the flights you want, go through and put your details in, and on the page you put your payment details in, you can select your seat. Select the flight(s) and it will show the layout for the flight, whether that be new or old.

Yes, but on regional routes there's a significant chance of an equipment change (often multiple times) before the flight actually happens.

The old regional J seats are absolutely fine for a 3 hour flight. I flew on them on this route, after being in F for 18 hours on JFK-YVR-HKG, and had no complaints. They're actually rather comfortable for relaxing. Not sleeping, but again, it's a 3 hour flight. There's actually more elbow room in these seats than on the new J.

If you book online through CX or KA it's really easy to filter through flights and find what you want. If unsure just click on the aircraft model and you even get a seating diagram which clearly shows the herringbone config. If like me you are more bothered about hard product than schedule then you can often score 74As all the way on some regional routes.

This weekend I flew 8 segments on CX (TPE-HKG-KUL and TPE-HKG-CGK) and got long haul product on 6. I specifically booked 5 flights with slightly inconvenient schedules to get 74As and lucked out with an equipment change on the 6th (e.g. regional A330 changed to long haul product).

I agree with your point of booking the 74A would be the easier to get the new J in CX

My experience was that booking a HKG-SIN flight, it was 33B at first, then changed to 77A 6 days before departure, then 773 the day before departure, and I think they change the equipment because of the load. If the demand is increasing, CX would try to use a aircraft with more seats. So if you book the 74A, the chance of changing equipment would be smaller as it is the highest capacity aircraft in CX, but of course they can change it because of the low load, but the chance is lower.

I'm have an upcoming flight in J from SIN to HKG that appears to be the new J. The flight number is 734. Of course aircraft type can change between now and then.

will be travelling HKG _ SYD next month .
online .....the schedule/timetable says aircraft type would be 33B
but after confirmation - an online booking - the aircraft type changed to 330 ........so what gives ???:confused:

strange that they woulld use the old 330 on this route as i recently flew PVG - HKG and it was a 33B......which was unecessary really considering the time....

actually am not a fan of the new J seats on cathay ...a little narrow and too fiddly ...:D:mad:

does anyone know what would be the final aircraft type or better still the type of seats in J for this ..
thanks
