Hi,

In December, I will be flying SIN-TPE via HKG on Cathay Pacific Business Class, with an overnight in HKG before proceeding into TPE.

We arrive too late to be bothered going into town, and I'm on a budget, therefore would prefer to stay in the lounge.

Of the lounges I can access, Qantas and the 2 CX lounges, which would be the best for sleeping in. Do I have any other options to stay in the terminal?

Thanks,

Neither of the lounges is open through the night. The Qantas one shuts from the last BA departure until (I think) two hours before the first QF one (so for about 5 hours). The CX lounge shuts largely around midnight, keeping a small area open until the YYZ departure at 2:45am or so. Then it closes for about 3 hours.

The only lounge open all night that I'm aware of is the Plaza Premium Lounge (http://www.plaza-ppl.com/hk_en/index.php). Which will cost you money.

Ah, I just assumed it would stay open for the whole night.

Thanks for your help.

HKG airport has some sleeper seats. Some are just below the United/Star alliance lounge behind some shops. I am sure there are more places where you can spend a few hours. It is on the left side before you get to the gates on the way to the CX pier from the train station.
If you are not too tired go into town (trains are running till around midnight and from around 6 am). Lots of nightlife on Hong Kong island. Round trip ticket should be around 180 HK$ (same day return likely does not apply). Or get the special for 2 traveling together - which should be cheaper.

if you don't have the onward boarding pass, you will not be able to go through the trasit security gate and to the departure level. This means you will not be able to access any airline lounges because all lounges are on departure level.

This is true, but I would expect CX to have issued the oneward BP in SIN since it's all one airline/PNR with a less than 24hr connection.

OP should be able to get onward BP in SIN. If not, the transfer desks and CX check-in should still be open when OP arrives. OP can obtain onward BP in HKG.

Marriott SkyCity in HKG is the best option. They can be booked via one Chinese source for CNY598 which is about USD$80. Otherwise the paid lounge is the best.

Thanks guys for all your help. It sounds like leaving the airport will be the best option.

Which is the better airport hotel option, the Regal or the Marriott?

I would assume the Marriott but the Novotel Citygate (usually a cheaper option) is only 10 mins away and they run a shuttle service.

How long is your layover? There are some really nice hotels for less than US$60-70/night including free airport shuttle around the Causeway Bay area. Worth looking at if you don't mind a trek from the airport and back.

About 12 hours, so sounds like that will be the option. Happy to pay around that amount.

Thanks!

There are no boarding announcements at all in Hong Kong (clearly stated on the CX "Transit in Hong Kong" guide, so it's basically peace and quiet overnight (and in past experiences where I had a departure at 12:15AM as well as 8:30AM). However, I don't know why one time Singapore Airlines had a final call? <= Violating the rules?

Anyway, HKG is full of comfy sofas (there's some near Burger King) and some people sleep at there to save $$. Free wi-fi is available throughout the airport and computer desktops are somewhere in the middle of the terminal.

I thought they were both pretty nice. The Regal is usually more expensive, because it's more convenient -- directly connected to the terminal, about a 5 minute walk. The Marriott requires a shuttle bus.

I will be flying SIN-TPE via HKG on Cathay Pacific Business Class
<...>
I'm on a budget
Then don't fly Business Class, and use the miles/money saved to get yourself a hotel room. I would gladly trade off 4 hours in a somewhat more comfortable seat for 12 hours in a bed vs. chair. Sometimes I wonder about peoples' priorities here...

Wow. That's a first for CX.

CX is ridiculous now - HKG to BKK J class for less than $600USD! AND it's upgradable.

Ex TPE special. TPE-SIN return for around $438 AUD in J.

Its about $350 to Jakarta, and around $580 to DPS. AUD.

That's not cheap at all, if you compare with other points of origin such as TPE. And I've yet to see a business class paid fare that's not upgradeable (with miles). Nonetheless, 3-class flights to BKK are now almost non-existent. I'm confused as to what you are trying to get across here...

744s (747-400) to BKK all have first class, so I have no idea where you get this non-existent stuff from. And you can fly cheaper from TPE via China Airlines (I'd rathr not risk death, thanks) or EVA (not part of any alliance) all you want, but there's a reason why these airlines are not even close to CX's standard.

Yes, that's why I typed almost. If you go here (http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_TW/offerspromotions/offerslanding?refID=6d2878666d473210VgnVCM62000007 d21c39____&WAcampid=TPE_OFFERS_IPROMOSEP09&WAemail=HOME), you'll find that TPE-HKG-BKK on CX is only TWD 10,200 (or about 310 USD), which is much cheaper than the price you mentioned above (under 600 USD). Plus, if you wanted to, you can fit in two extra visits to TPE too.

Although CX's 74As all have the new seats, CX only guarantees 74A only twice a week per CX's flight schedule. All other flights are not guaranteed to have F class, so IMO that's not a lot of flights to BKK with F class fitted in.

CX only guarantees 74A only twice a week per CX's flight schedule."Guarantees" is too strong. "Currently indicates at the time of booking" is more accurate, but as with all regional flights the equipment can vary multiple times. To BKK you could end up with anything at all.
