Hi Peeps:
So I know the deal is over regarding earning AMEX MR when purchasing AMEX Gift Cards with your AMEX...
...but since AMEX online accepts MC/VISA for Gift Card purchases...
1. Can I earn CITI TYP's if I use my CITI card to purchase AMEX Gift Cards?
2. Treated as cash advance or purchase?
Anyone have any experience?
I did not realize that American Express still sold travellers cheques online, where do you see them offered?
Online giftcard purchases are subject to both a service fee and a delivery charge. There are frequent promotions which waive the service fee, but you will still pay for delivery. Gift card purchases are eligible to earn rewards if you use (for example) the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card. I have not made a recent purchase with a Membership Rewards card.
My wife did purchase one gift card at a corporate American Express Travel Service Office. She used an Amex network card issued by Bank of America. The transaction posted as a cash advance. (The office warned her that this would happen, she didn't understand the significance.) I assume, but do not know for certain, the same would happen if using a Mastercard or VISA.
To be safe I would always use a card issued by American Express to purchase giftcards, but it would be low risk to make a test purchase using an otherwise dormant card from another issuer.

Amex gift card purchases are treated as purchases by most credit card issuers.
I purchased Amex gift card online with citi and chase cards before and they were treated as purchase.
