Budget Travel - Advice sought: Phuket hotel on a budget

I'm taking a couple of girlfriends with me to Phuket in december (14-20th). Normally I'd just stay in hostels, but with a few of us I figure it'll be better value to get a hotel room.
Does anyone have any recommendations for how to grab cheap hotels? We don't really mind where it is (I figure we'll rent a car since the tuktuks are so expensive!). I'm willing to splurge a bit for a nicer place, but want good value for money.
Cheers!

k_sheep,
I took the liberty of editing the title of your request, as the original does not reflect a request. Hopefully it will be a little clearer, and folks who want to help will click while those who cannot help do not have to waste their time clicking on a thread that is of no use to them.
Please try to make your titles clearer in the future.
Thanks,

Search phuket.com
I have found several hotels under 40 USD there.

Hostelworld.com seems to be the go to site for the low priced accomodations. They have a large selection of private room accomodation in the smaller, independant hotels. We use them and find that the customer survey results and comments that they show bring a substantial amount of business.
Also if you're looking for more of a Hotel, check the Ibis Patong's rates. They're new and near the beach.
There are dozens of cheap places in Patong but not bookable on the internet. They are clustered together "in town" a few blocks from the beach. Unless you go at absolute peak holiday time, unlikely that you find them all full.
