Is a star alliance award changeable under any condition at all? There has been a death in the family and I would like to move my return date of travel I have already commenced. The flights are on *A carriers with no united segments. I would appreciate any info on this regard.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Officialy you can not make any changes once you fly the first segment. In your case you can try to talk to UA and see if they can help you. You may even stand a better chance if you talk to the operating carrier but nothing is guaranteed.

Sorry about your loss.
I second todorovic's advice, and also would add...

Are you flying on a route where it would be possible to switch to UA metal (or even modify the route slightly within the same regions to get to a UA-served route)?

Thanks for your concerns folks. I tried and the answer was a no.

UA and AC - polite no
LH - very rude no

Sorry about your loss :(

The ticket was issued by United, so only United could help you.
As others said, the rules are no changes allowed once travel has commenced. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions even for deaths in the family. I've read cases where a sympathetic agent processed the change, so I would try a couple more times. Good luck!

The operating carriers cannot change it unless they are willing to fly you for completely free. @:-) They are only paid by UA if they fly you as booked by UA. Your only chance is to bug UA to change it. Come to think of it, depending on your nationality, it may not even be legal for AC or LH to fly you internationally without a ticket since they cannot reissue it for the new dates.

Alternatively, you can change it to take UA to SIN where you can buy a shorthaul ticket to MAA.
