American Express Membership Rewards - Watch those OPEN discount reversals

I have an SPG Business card I use very sporadically, mainly to segregate certain expenses and receive the OPEN discount (Hertz, Hyatt, and previously Delta).

I recently noticed a reversal of an OPEN discount from a Delta ticket that was purchased in January 2009 and refunded the day after purchase. They just reversed the credit, 9 months later.

In my case, it was an extremely small amount (about $5), however I can imagine with an international business class ticket, this discount could easily get up to a few hundred dollars. Just something to watch out for if you've purchased and refunded Delta tickets under this program in the last year. I wonder what would have happened if I had canceled the card at some point between January and now.

I'm surprised it took them this long to reverse the credit. In my case they've always reversed the credit at the same time as the actual transaction was refunded. Have you confirmed that they didn't double-dip on yours?

Yea, I went through all the transactions, they were correct, it wasn't credited when the ticket was refunded. Luckily, this card is very rarely used, which was the reason I posted. I can't imagine the hassle if this was my every day card with all sorts of other transactions mixed in.

My Delta Reserve card was just hit with several hundred dollars in reversals.
I too had always previously had the credit reversed immediately, so now I am going to have to go through my past statements to make sure this isn't an error.

I saw this once on one of my accounts, I asked a rep about it and they knew about as much as I did about the transaction-nothing

How are we suspose to know what is going on, or does it just happen when AMEX has to find some money to report better quarterly earnings at the last minute???
AMEX is crazy eh?

I see the same on my canceled account. Does anyone know if they have any limit how much time they have to debit those?

If all of these OPEN discount reversals that are coming in late are Delta, it could be that (now that Delta isn't a member of the OPEN network anymore) AMEX is finally reconciling and closing out all of the old Delta OPEN payables/receivables, leading to quite a few adjustments at once.

Is it possible that these specific transactions were charged before Delta dropped out of the OPEN program, but the reversals were done after? If so, that might be an unusual enough situation that the reversal of the discount fell through the cracks. If not, it makes one wonder how AMEX processes the discount reversals.

Might be. Just a question how far back they can go by law. When they make a mistake in their favor you only have 60 days to dispute. How many days do they have?

I mailed them about a $3 or so charge on an OPEN account that had been closed for half a year now, asking to reverse this "mistake". I called it that because I really have no other explanation for why they would reverse a credit that is almost 1 year old, that was among many others and was not for a DL ticket that had been canceled. When I checked a couple days later the charge was removed. YMMV.

I'm sure they will do it for $3, but can they charge you in the first place after a year? i did a google search, but can not find anything.
