I am thinking of flying AF next year. Would use AMEX miles to upgrade an economy ticket to business with miles. Is this possible and what is the class code for such a ticket. Is it the same as Delta which is Z.

First, you must buy a full-fare economy ticket (classes B,H,Y, but check the website, as they depend on the origin). To upgrade to Business, you need an available award seat, which is class O.
And check the prices of full-fare economy and business, because discounted business may be even cheaper than full-fare economy to buy, making the whole thing really useless.

Hi,

Slight correction, for tickets issued outside France/Japan/French, you need a Y/B/K fare, as per:

http://www.airfrance.fr/FR/fr/common/voyageurfrequent/flyingblue/tableau_surclassement_test_classes_eligibles.htm

(Could not find the same table on the US site)

Cheers,

As stated above, you can only uograde from an expensive economy fare, and the number of miles required for upgrade is also very high. For US-Europe one-way it costs 32.5Km as opposed to 50Km for a straight biz award, not a great advantage knowing that you have to pay the stiff economy fare on top of that. Furthermore, If you are based in the US, it is hardly worth it given the low discounted Z fares that can be comparable to an expensive economy fare. Upgrades might only be justified if your company pay for Y and you wish to travel J, but many companies would book you in a class bucket that is not upgradable. Better keep themiles and buy a J award ticket for leisure.

IMO upgrades are worth only if company/client pays the Y/B/(K) tickets.

Quick bumped question related to the topic : is an upgraded Y/B/(K) ticket refundable?
The question has 2 sides :
- if one decides to get back his upgrade, will the miles be refunded?
- if one decides to cancel the ticket, will the miles be refunded?

The miles are deducted from the passenger's account after the flight so cancelling an upgraded flight in advance would not require to request a refund of the MFU.

Thanks Falco.

In my experience the miles have been deducted at the time of booking the upgrade. The flight has not occurred yet.
