My husband and I were flying home on Monday and volunteers were needed. I originally volunteered, but SWA could not get me out until the next day. My husband was able to stay overnight, I could not. He received over $470.00 and was confirmed on the first flight out. Because a connection flight was late, a couple of people could not make my flight. My husband was able to get on my flight and still keep his voucher. Had I taken the risk, I also would have had over $470 in voucher money.
Have you ever heard of giving up your seat, getting voucher money and then making your original flight?
Needless to say we love SWA.

Yes, I think it's another example of "doing the right thing".. ^
Your husband did SWA a favor and gave up his seat, they returned the favor by not taking back the voucher. By letting him take the original flight, they also save the cost of the hotel room.

Usually they do not take the volunteer unless they are certain that they will need the seats. Why would WN do this? They can always tell the volunteers after they have boarded or 10 min ahead and deny boarding to latecomers. I have often boarded with understanding agent would call me out if they needed the seat. WN is leaving money on the table on this one.
And they should KNOW (do they not know who is connecting from which flight) that the inbound would be too late for connectors to make it. Bad decisions by WN.
