I'm planning to travel from JFK to Rio via Sao Paolo on TAM. As a dual national, I have both a European passport and an American passport. The European passport doesn't need a visa for Brazil so I want to use that one to enter Brazil.

I expect I'll have to show both passports at check-in in New York. One as a departing American, details forwarded to TSA as usual. The other to prove that I can get into Brazil without a visa.

Has anyone got recent experience with this or does anyone know of any difficulties with this approach?

Thanks!

I do not see any problem here, this seems perfectly feasible. Upon check in TAM will ask for your passport and you simply present your European passport, which entails no need for visa. When you land in Brazil only show you European airport for immigration authorities.

However, I would call TAM just to be sure and avoid any last minute problem.

Enjoy your trip.

Rgs,

ps: I would pose this question in the South America forum since they discuss a lot issues related to visa, immigration, etc. You will get a better and quicker asnwer on the South American travel forum.

TAM check in at JFK is usually civilized and moves quickly. They are very experienced at checking that each passenger has either the requisite VISA, or is exempted. Of note, as you board the aircraft at the gate they often again check for the requisite VISA or exemption.
