Asiana Club - Seat Assignment in F blocked for airport assignment

I have a reservation in F from ICN to LAX. I asked to book the two seats together in row four (747) as there are two of us on the reservation. I was told those were blocked for airport assignment. I am mildly miffed. Now, I am on an award, but had I paid big bucks for a ticket, I'd be pissed. Is this standard operating procedure? Can I get those seats at online check in?

Most airlines block certain seats even for the most expensive tickets. So OZ is not alone. Why they would block those seats for airport check-in I don't know. Have you tried to call again and see whether you get the same answer?
What date are you looking at?

I have a similar problem with Asiana and they give me a similar response. I have a reservation for award travel on OZ 236 (ICN-ORD) on October 31 in C class. They randomly assigned me 6 E and G (aisle and middle in the center). I would much prefer two on the side but they just tell me "maybe at the airport". I can't pull up a seat map on their website (not sure why) so I don't know if C is that full or what. This is my first trip on OZ; any thoughts from regulars on OZ?

As I explained in other thread (yes, please do a search) about this flight, there is one seat for sure is reserved for the reserve FO. He is going to take any empty C seat. And no, he can't take F seat, as F is only for reserve captain. But he would not be in Y either. On top of it, they may also take extra seat for deadhead FO.
Also C can also be full as this flight is not daily.
OZ is quite famous for blocking seats for airport check-in use only. Search this forum, and you will see, that there are more folks with these questions/problems. It doesn't make any sense to call OZ, as they cannot assign these seats, either. Book the best option available, head to the airport and they will do their best to sort it out. After couple of trips from FRA to AU in D, this weird system is not annoying me any longer :D

I recently booked a *alliance C award ticket LAX-ICN-HKG for late November - thankfully, before booking I had read on the forum about Asiana's propensity to block a large % of seats so that they couldn't be assigned until the airport.
Prior to making my award booking I joined Asiana Club (their FF program) and was give an FF #. With the FF # and my confirmation # for the flight, I was able to go to the Asiana website and pre-select seats in C. Their webtool isn't super-intuitive, but it gets the job done. After completing the process I went back online to double check my seat assignements a few days later, and they were there so I assume (hope) they will stick.
So Peter11 - if you have an Asiana FF # you might want to try and use the online tool. If you don't, perhaps join (is online sign-up) and then call reservations to have them add your FF # to your PNR - this might enable you to use the online tool and (possibly) book your F seats. Could be worth a shot.....
You can access seat assignments by choosing "seat selections" under the "booking" tab on the U.S. site:

Actually, this is one of the reasons why I won't generally book with Asiana in F when both of us are flying.
They always have those centre seats "blocked", as well as row 1.
Why on earth they block the only seats that couples would choose is beyond me. Even if you call them, they'll tell you the seats are "taken" (?). I guess if there is another couple on board, you'd better get to the airport first.
They also "require" that you pre-book the Korean meal, or else it will not be loaded on your flight.
I don't like surprises so I usually go with another airline.
Asiana and Malaysia both frequently have a captain sitting in F (actually, Malaysia seems to have at least 2 pilots at a time there, in the last row middle seats)!

Actually, I have done searches and read all of the above before. I joined the Asiana Club as well. Unfortunately, for whatever reason the OZ website will not display my reservation or seat maps; it simply says to contact the US reservation office. Neither PNR nor FF# will work. I can only assume it has something to do with the fact that it is a partner award ticket. Other posters have reported the same problem previously. At this point I'm just curious how full C class is for my flight.

I think you'll just have to cross fingers.

Mine is a partner award flight as well.
I booked eveything though US Airways Award Reservations - went online at the Asiana site, and eveything pulled up just fine. Maybe I'm lucky ??
Again - I haven't yet taken the flight (still about 5 weeks off) so time will tell if the seats come out as I selected on-line, but so far seems to be OK.

I flew OZ F ICN-LAX two days ago. I hadn't bothered to pick seats prior to last week. I was shocked to only be able to get 1 of 2 seats assigned. OZ reservations gave very poor explanations to my superb hotel concierges, and it was quite worrying to me. I was bemused that a confirmed F ticket didn't mean an F seat assignment, and wondered about denied boarding. Fortunately, a couple FT friends knew the drill and reassured me.
I won't bother with with all the variations of discussions we had even on the day, trying to get seats further forward in the cabin. In the end, we managed to get 2A and 3A. 1A and 1K were empty, and only 6 of 10 seats were occupied.

The online seat selection works for award flights.
You do need to have an Asiana FF number, which does not need to be in the booking at all, so no need to have the number added to your PNR.
You also need to put in the Asiana reservation number, which should be visible on CMT.
I have found that it works best using Internet Explorer rather than Firefox.

This is very important advice. Most Korean websites will not work at all with anything but IE.

Maybe for you but not for me. I even confirmed my PNR with Asiana and tried using IE and Firefox on a PC as well as Safari and Firefox on a mac. CMT doesn't work either. I actually have 3 PNR's - one from US since it is a US Dividend Miles award, one from UA for ORD-PVG and one from OZ for PEK-ICN-ORD. None work on the Asiana website or CMT.
