Southwest Rapid Rewards - Can I tell where my plane is coming FROM?

It would be really useful when trying to determine if my flight may be late to know where it is coming from. Is there any way to correlate my flight number with the incoming flight?

Since many WN flights are continuations, the first thing to check is if it's the same flight number coming from somewhere else. I usually do this with FlightAware.com (http://www.flightaware.com).

If this doesn't work, once at the airport I'll scour the arrival monitors for the flight scheduled to arrive at the gate I'm departing from about 30 minutes before our scheduled departure. Of course, the big downside to this is that it can only be done at the airport.

Finally, at small stations you can often deduce which plane is making up your flight from the schedule since there aren't that many flights.

The wiki doesn't mention some of the newer offerings from www.flightaware.com and www.flightstats.com, both of which are good websites; but both can be time-consuming and sometimes problematic to use if you're surfing on a smart phone while sitting in an airport.

If you have an iPhone, Flight Aware recently released an app that you can find here: http://flightaware.com/news/article/FlightAware-releases-first-free-flight-tracking-iPhone-App/113

If you have a Blackberry, I think the mobile version of Flight Stats is best. You can find that here: http://mobile.flightstats.com/go/Mobile/home.do

It is funny when I have to travel on another airline besides WN because I feel like a rookie navigating their web sites, figuring out fare classes, etc. but I was really impressed with CO's website. Among other things, they let you know where the plane will be coming from, the plane type, and how delayed it is when you bring up the reservation and it is all on one screen. It would seem if CO can do it WN could do it too, but with the recent system changes, I guess I will just hope for a working website!

Now to keep it more on topic, if I am unable to figure out the info from Flight Aware, I just call WN (1-800-435-9792) and ask the CSR for the info before I get to the airport. They are usually more than happy to provide the info.

Must be something wrong with this idea. It's too easy and obvious.

Interesting that they devote IT manpower to feature all their delayed flights so prominently.

Easy until you call on a busy day and sit on hold for an hour...or worse yet, choose the option to have a CSR call you back -- and they never call back.

Check the flight status on the SW home page, but put your departing city in the "arrival" box, with the fight number, and leave the departure city blank. If your flight is a continuation from another city, it will show up; if your flight originates in your departure city, you will get an error message. You can also backtrack the originating city the same way, to see if the flight came from somewhere else to there.
