Does anyone know what the status is regarding the Savoy's reopening? Considering a trip to London next year (maybe summer), and would like to stay at the Savoy. But as of yet, there's not even a scheduled opening date.

Any insights? Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing a while back so I emailed the manager who maintains a very-infrequent blog here (http://www.the-savoy.com/)

He said that they'd found the infrastructure was much worse than anticipated and they'd had to do much more extensive work on the plumbing, heat, and wiring than planned. As of this summer they weren't expecting to open before "early 2010".

I'm looking forward to the opening, but expecting that there will be a huge price increase. It definitely sounds like they're trying to move it a peg or two upscale.

Last word from Fairmont was in this Aug. thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/fairmont-presidents-club/981056-fairmont-unveils-revamped-renovated-properties.html

In 2010, Fairmont will reopen two of the world’s most iconic hotels. Early in the year The Savoy will once again lay claim to its status as London’s premier social destination when it unveils the culmination of a GBP100 million restoration program – the most expensive hotel refurbishment in London’s history. The Peace Hotel, a Shanghai landmark for over a century, is also being restored and will reopen as the Fairmont Peace Hotel. The hotel has hosted distinguished guests from all over the world, including politicians, artists and celebrities such as General Marshall, Charlie Chaplin, Bernard Shaw and Noel Coward, who wrote Private Lives while in residence.

Hi,

am currently trying to find out the same.

Actually found several news from June this year saying it's been officially announced that the hotel would not open “until the end of the first quarter of 2010" (e.g. http://www.caterersearch.com/Articles/2009/06/26/328399/series-of-delays-push-savoy-reopening-back-to-march.html).
Therefore I base my plannings on a date in April 2010 earliest, even though it's slightly worrying that the Savoy website doesn't give any clear statement at all.

Hope that helps,
Blackburn

Thanks.
Planning trip there next SUMMER, so I'm just scouting it out now. Hope the Savoy will be available for booking some time early next year. Would love to spend a few days there.
