Hi All!

I should know this, but advancing age (I guess) has defeated me. Also apologies in advance - my search didn't show this question.

I am headed to the UK for a week of business and a weekend; and will be hiring a car at Heathrow. I read the booking info. (yes, I am a geek) and Alamo has a term that the primary driver will be required to post a deposit of UKL1,000. I know that happened once before when I used a Visa card but do not recall if it happened with Amex.

I will be using an Amex card; accepting the basic CDW insurance; have additional insurance through work and personal travel insurance. I also am taking a GPS rental.

Anyone know what deposits I am going to have taken/authorised on my Amex? It may affect my spending while in the UK.

Many thanks

I don't think it matters what card is used - deposit is taken, regardless. A lot of car rental companies are now taking larger deposits, and not just putting holds on the card as they did in the past. Over at www.irelandyes.com, there is a large discussion of this new practice, and a great listing of which car companies are doing what.
