View Full Version : Can you hold an award booking?

I need two one way SQ Y class awards (or one open jaw).

BNE-SIN-MNL

BCN-SIN-BNE

MNL to Spain will be an AA award which I can't book for another couple weeks.

I need to coordinate the days as I don't want to be paying more than necessary for accommodation. Of course I also want the 15% online discount.

This is for Sept 2010. I don't have status, these are all Amex transferred miles.

So how can I hold one booking while I wait for the other one to become available? If I can't get the exact dates I want, I need to move the whole thing forward or backward by a day or two, not just add more days on as the budget will be tight.

Is there usually any problem to get Y class awards? Most other threads are dealing with J or F class which seem to be hard to get, but I hardly ever see people looking for Y class.

Should be no issue with non status and Amex MR transfer to Krisflyer.

There is no way to hold an online booking while waiting for another booking to clear.

The problem with Y awards might be if they are available. On all my flights this year I have been told Y has been full (SYD-SIN & AKL-SIN).

So what do I do if for example, I can get outbound of 1 Sep 2010. Then I go to book the return and I want 15 Sep but nothing is available until 18 Sep. I don't want to spend the extra 3 days so I would want to move the outbound up to 3 Sep. Can I change the dates with no penalty or do I have to cancel, pay the fee and rebook?

So when you book an award, it is ticketed immediately with no chance for people to confirm leave off work, spouse's leave, etc?

You are required to confirm and pay immediately. As I understand it, once ticketed the only option is to cancel (a 5,000 or US$25 penalty?) and re-book for the days you require.

Do you have any specific dates in mind?. Eleven months out I think you should be fine – I’ve plugged a couple of random dates in for dummy bookings and everything is wide open.

SIN-MNL is very popular Christmas/New Year and Easter (overseas workers returning home for family reunions). September shouldn’t be an issue.

BCN-SIN you are restricted to one flight a day (the codeshare on LH via FRA does not appear to be offered for online redemption). The SQ operated flight goes via Milan so you are competing with passengers originating from both BCN and MXP for award seats. September is still high season in Spain. If you are going to get availability problems on any leg of your trip I would expect it to be this one.

I’ve never really had a problem booking award seats on SQ and for the last couple of years have flown on the peak Christmas/Easter days – I’ve booked ahead by a couple of months but have never gone to extreme lengths. SQ offered an anniversary promotion earlier this year with 25% off redemption bookings (50% off on selected routes). This distorted things for a while and could possibly have coincided with the dates when WLG Base was looking for award seats?.

I reckon you’re safe sitting still and doing nothing until the AA award flights become available. Manila I wouldn’t be too worried about with several flights a day. If anything I would focus on getting flights in and out of Barcelona – its not a cheap city and hotel prices in high season will really sting if you have to extend due to non-availability of award seats.

I would also wait till everything is ready, and then book.

Provided there is award availability in the same class, SQ allows you to change your award flight without any penalty, and provided you make the changes online as well (not difficult to do;)), you can hang on to your 15% online booking discount as well. i have made several changes to my outbound Syd-Sin-Bcn award flight over the last few months without any penalty^

Got the BCN-SIN-BNE with no troubles at all, even got seats booked! The flights are wide open but didn't want to take a chance.

The outbound has been shifted to an AA redemption on CX because of hassles trying to get a oneway MNL-HKG-LHR-MAD-TFN so I added BNE-HKG-MNL and the ticket went through fine.
