I am due to travel air asia through LCCT in KUL in a few weeks. Is there anything to do at the airport there? Is it worth paying to enter the lounge?

Any help would be appreciated as i have 5 hours to kill.

I was through KUL in January with a 5 hour layover - I exited through Immigration and went outside the airport for daybreak (Chinese New Year was a few days before and the building was decorated up with lanterns, etc). The grounds around the terminal are nice enough to kill a couple hours exiting and re-entering.... I took some photos: I got some neat contrails with the curvy roof line of the main terminal in the foreground.

the LCCT is outside of the main terminal at KUL...its where Air Asia and other low cost carriers board/arrive...not a whole lot to do there, and KUL is kinda far from the center of the city...

LCCT is a crappy little place. Not much to do there and not much choice for food either. Don;t know if they have lounges. If there is, you might as well pay and check it out.

I haven't used Air Asia before, but with connecting flights is it possible to get the boarding passes more than a couple of hours before the flight? or to do an airside transfer?

Otherwise it might be tough to get through security to the pay lounge in the LCC terminal.

Depends on your nationality ...
If youīre EU-citizen nothing to worry regarding immigration - even for a couple of hours ...

Regarding Air Asia you can do online check-in from 48hrs before departure (until 4hrs before dep.) In case you have luggage - baggage drop is open from 2 hrs before dep. only !!!
(but iīd recommend checking that upon arrival - maybe thereīs another "solution")

Airside transfer is not possible at LCCT !

LCCT is in fact completely separate from KLIA - itīs exactly on the opposite side of the airport.

Honestly thereīs almost nothing to do at LCCT besides strolling through the crowded hall and checking out the couple of food outlets.

And 5hrs between flights is not really enough for going downtown since the (although frequent and cheap) coach service takes 1hr to KL-Sentral (shutteling to KLIA and taking the train to KL-Sentral comes out the same)

For additional info www.klia.com.my might be helpful as it provides infos for both KLIA and LCCT !

Also http://lcct.klia.com.my/index.php?ch=4 is specifically for LCCT

Thanks for all the help everyone. It looks like i wont have much to do but if i can check my bag in at least 2 hours before i will probably pay to use the lounge.

I was there for a long time also. There is nothing to do there. There is free internet though, although super duper slow.

Check in online and drop off your luggage. If u are flying to Indonesia, it is a freakin mad house. Took us an hour to check in cuz there are no dedicated lines like the other flights. I rec to take a shuttle to KLIA to hang out. Better food, nice accomm, etc...

The lounge is nothing special (and landside, btw), but it does have internet (and I think wifi) and some light snacks (small sandwiches). It is, however, the Ritz compared with the rest of the terminal. I don't really think it's worth paying, but for five hours perhaps you can justify it. There are some tolerable fastfoodish restaurants in the terminal, and enough people watching etc. to at least a few hours.

+ a very big 1.

One thing to note is that there is a food court a short walk from the terminal which offers a wider range of cheaper food that the places in the terminal. It's to the left as you exit the terminal. Over toward where the buses leave from.

I was there around the same time (3 times over Sept/Oct '08) and didn't see anything like that, either, but there was substantial construction going on in the area, so it's possible something was added.

Wish I'd have known about the lounge! I didn't see anything like that. Would have been nice and useful for the 5-hour layover we had in transit from REP to HAN or the 3-hour layover we had en route from LKG to BKK. (We just pilfered an electrical outlet from Gloria Jean's for a few hours...)

It was there when I was there in July 09, but not finished in April 09 I believe. Though maybe I was just asleep in April! I definitely wasn't there in Dec 08.

As said above the regular terminal has WiFi, just slow. The landside choice and minimart outside has reasonable prices on food/beer, the airside prices are extortionate.

Depending on how late your flight is, how long the wait is for immigration, and how busy checkin is for your next destination you might not have much time at all - 2-3hrs for all of this.

I was there last there in Feb 09 and it was open for business. There is a KFC plus about 10 other food court style places and a small convenience store. I think the complex is called the Garden food court IIRC.

Hi all,

I'm traveling through LCCT in Kuala Lumpur with my small family - a 6-weeks pregnant wife and a somewhat fussy 2 year old.

We bought the AirAsia ticket a while back without much research, for example I didn't know that we'd be going through LCCT until a few weeks ago.

Our land 7 AM in the morning and leaves 1 PM on the same day - 6 hour transit. We should be OK for immigration and checkin.

I'm concerned about the 'low cost' facilities - will there be airconditioning, seats, and clean toilets? I'm pretty resilient myself, but I'm worried about the pregnant wife and the fussy kid. I'm picturing a sweaty, nauseated wife who needs to go to the toilet but can't because it's flooded and dirty, and a kid who's trying to cope with noise and heat at the same time.

Please share your experiences with this terminal ... and any tips on how to make our transit more comfortable? I had a look at the Premium Lounge but gosh RM180 is a steep price to pay (for both of us).

I should've done more research before buying the ticket ... but here I am stuck with the flight, please help me make the best out of a potentially painful transit ...

THANK YOU in advance!

This is based on my recollection from a trip that I took from the LCCT about a year ago. So I don't have all the details you need but I do have some (note though I wasn't really paying attention so if I'm wrong someone please correct me).

This terminal is essentially all AirAsia. Because this is their hub, you can expect the terminal to be busy and quite packed with people. It's a basic operation however you can get airconditioning by going to McDonalds or one of the other fast food places. As for seating, I don't recall much on the ground side up to check in. However there is seating at each of the gates after passport control, also it's much more organized on the airside. Toilets I can't comment on, I didn't use them. However the LCCT is fairly new. I presume they will be ok.

The LCCT is about 5 or so km from KUL. There is a shuttle bus that runs fairly regularly between KUL main terminal and the LCCT for I believe one ringgit each (assume a 10 minute ride). Given your long layover, if you find the LCCT too spartan you may want to escape to KUL for two or three hours.

One thing I do remember about the LCCT is the poor signeage directing people to the correct check in counters and what seems like a lot of people trying to figure out which queue to line up on. So take a moment to make sure you have your bearings especially if you go to KUL main terminal.

Memory has the toilets being entirely free, clean (at least the mens), and there's also free wifi.

Despite being LCC it's still better than 99% of Indian air terminals.

Thank you for the info. Happy to hear that the toilets may be clean.

I read elsewhere they've opened a new food court near the LCCT - called Garden Food Court. Anyone has any experience of this food court? Is it open at 7 AM in the morning?

The other thing to keep in mind (especially if you're in the mood to freshen up as well) is the Tune hotel next to the LCCT has day rates available - see http://www.tunehotels.com/LCCTTransit_KualaLumpur_Malaysia.aspx for details. Not the most luxurious place to stay, but if you've just come off an overnight flight and have a few hours to kill it'll fit the bill.

Isn't there an AirAsia lounge you can pay for? (I don't know about the quality). Otherwise, the terminal is quite ok IMO.

Yeah there is a lounge located in the check in area. i don't think it is operated by AK though. I think it is managed by a third party.

It might be. Now I'm guessing at this because I don't remember seeing this during my last visit (only read about it in the other thread) what you find at some of these Asian airports is a canteen for the airport workers - but it's open to the public too. It may be that this is what the food court is. If so, this is your best bet for trying out Malaysian style food.

Do us a favor - when you're at the LCCT check out the food court and let us know what it's like, either on this thread or started on a new thread, ok? Thanks!

While one thread asks about family travel, I went ahead and combined the two recent KUL LCCT threads into one.

The LCCT's food court is not too bad... 6-8 options IIRC, from western to Malaysian. I don't remember the prices.

Apparently the day rates at the Tune hotel are RM60 for 3 hours (plus additional for air-con and towel rental of course if you need 'em :D). Still works out significantly cheaper than trying to get everyone into the lounge though.

The prices are similar to you would pay in a mall food court in Malaysia. The KFC, at least, is open 24 hours.

There is Plaza Premium Lounge (google it) at the landside and at the airside, though both are not connected. The airside is bigger and better.. Cost RM80 per person.

Now with an expanded international terminal of LCCT, there are more shops to go around including a few coffee shops (Starbucks, Old Town White Coffee, etc) as well as fast food (Marrybrown, Macdonald, Chocolat). You can walk outside the international terminal for more shops and pharmacy.

If you walk down the bus side, you can see a Food Garden, food court for cheaper more variety local food. Behind that food court is the Tune Hotels.

So you have a bit of things to do.

We the renovated and expansion it is less busy than it used to. People used to sleep on the floor bfore! And, the toilets are cleaner and more in number.

SO i think 6 hours transit is not too bad at all, considering you still need to check in (at least the bags).

Yes, it is messy so you need a couple of minutes to get used to it's layout.
