Hi,
You will not need anything because you will be sitting inside the plane for the 2 hrs transit in SYD & the same in BKK as well.

Actually you do get off the plane in SYD, and go through the transit facilities into the terminal.
I am not sure if you need a visa though.

You should not need a visa for anywhere if you stay on the plane or in the transit lounge.
But you may need a visa if you leave the airport to stay at a hotel or have to catch your connecting flight from a different airport.
Not sure of your nationality, but for most if you have a long stop over in BKK and want to leave the airport you can get a "Visa Exempt" stamp in you passport on arrival valid for 30 days.

In SYD certain nationalities DO require a visa to transit (I am not certain which nationalities though).
A work colleague travelling on a Dutch passport ended up stuck in SYD unable to enter the transit area when our corporate travel agent booked him Christchurch-Sydney-Vancouver, and overlooked the fact he wasn't on a Kwiw passport!
Eventually (after several hours) they let him in & Air NZ kindly put him on a flight to Vancouver...
Anyway, I don't think you need a visa as you are only there for 2 hours & are on a US passport - see: http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/transit/no-visa.htm
