I've got an interesting booking issue that hopefully you can help me with.
The missus and I have plans for a trip from OSL to the US next summer. Around the end of july into August timeframe. We've got some places we like to visit but we are flexible on exact destinations.
We both have 47-49k miles so almost the magical 50 000 at FB.

1 So the first question is how do we get a few extra thousand miles? I'm guessing buying them now seems like a decent option at least considering we don't have any planned trips and KLM hardly pays out miles on low-cost economy anyway.

2 The second question is how do we use up our FB miles and get ourselves TATL Business flights next summer for a good price?

My idea was to try to find a decent priced refundable option somewhere and then wait for the JUL-AUG Promo-awards and hope we can snag some tickets that way.
I've found Icelandair has Premium Economy seats at around €900 which are refundable on the OSL-NYC route which seams like a decent backup.
The only questions then regarding the promo awards then would be how likely do you think it is we will find an award to a US/Canadian city fitting our relatively flexible schedule?
Aproximately how much will the Promo Award cost us in actual $ in addition to the 50k miles?

I'm also open to buying economy tickets and upgrading those, but that has earlier seemed like a pretty expensive option.

There are lots of post on here about getting extra miles. There is a recent one with a trip that nets 6,000 miles for a relatively small outlay. I think you will find the posts with no trouble, but if you can't, please let me know and I'll find the ones that I recall.

It seems to me that promos invariably include Europe-North America. I would be astonished if there were no 50,000 mile-cost C trips for that route.

As you are flexible on time and destination I would not bother buying the refundable option now.

Cost in taxes etc varies a bit, but not that much (for that kind of route). As a guide, I just booked BHX-MEX as a C promo, and that came to around 400 Euros.

Good luck with finding a good value flight for your trip.

Yes I saw the CSA flight LHR-KRK in business but the cost was still £215 and flying out from OSL is usually more expensive. KLM charges €53 for the needed 2600 miles which means I loose the adventure of the trip, but it is easier as well :) It seems doing milage runs from OSL is usually not worth it as those flights are relatively expensive, at least when I just want enough miles to get enough for the Promo Award.
We are heading over to Star Allience to try that after we've burned up our miles with FB.

Thank you for the €400 price for the taxes.

I was problably not precise enough in my OP. We can fly home from anywhere almost in the US as we can take a feeder flight, but our return date is flexible in the sense we can go on monday, tuesday and maybe wednesday. As I need to be back at work.

Hi Cobos,

I think this thread may get oved to FB as it is much more FB than KL related ... but in the meantime ...

It may be worth noting that the CSA 6,000 trip gives level miles as well as award miles. You can only buy award miles (as you know). You currently have c48,000 award miles. It depends on what you have as level miles as to whether you might think 2 x CSA 6,000 miles trips could be worthwhile - 40,000 for Gold. Why bother? Well ... I was recently staus-matched by BMI for *A. As you mentioned going to *A, then maybe the CSA route might be worth it - as you can get your award miles, get Gold on FB, then nip over to *A via BMI status match. You would still keep your Gold FB of course.

Just a thought ... :>)
