Asia - why flying SEA > SEL > NRT > SEA seems much less than going to NRT first?

I'm thinking of going from Seattle, WA to Tokyo, Japan (for ~3 days at Tokyo Motor Show) and a bit of sightseeing then Seoul, South Korea then back to Seattle.

For some reason, it seems make a huge difference in price depending on whether I fly to from Seattle to Narita vs. Seattle to Seoul judging by my searches on Kayak.

I'd really rather go to Narita first so I can make the Tsukiji fish market (never been to it before) due it being easier to get up early due to jet lag. I'd also rather spend more time in Japan than Korea so the 2nd trip below isn't actually ideal but illustrates my point.

Example for $974 on Kayak.com:
10/26 SEA to ICN
10/30 ICN to NRT
11/4 NRT to SEA

High priced example just by swapping (why???): $1200 on Kayak.com
10/26 SEA to NRT
10/30 NRT to ICN
11/4 ICN to SEA

Unfortunately, there's no way to search for flexible dates on Kayak when doing multi-city trips. :( Does it have something to do w/the dates or the carriers that end up being used?
