I heard a story from a most unreliable source about him getting a row of exit row seats to himself.

Could this ever happen? Do SQ ever leave exit row seats empty?

Yes, I have seen it once, not on SQ but I think it could happen to them too. I was leaving Vienna on OS flight (don't remember number, but I think OS1) to Australia on Friday 13th. It was 777 and there were 2 passengers in business class and 21 in economy!!! No need for emergency exit seats. Each passenger in economy could choose from big selection of seats in 3-4-3 configuration of their plane... This has changed half way through, the plane was half full on the second leg of flight to Australia :-)

Two Etihad flights I was on in the last month left with Emergency Exit seats untouched. Being the last to board, I just took my choice and sat down as if they were mine. No-one challenged me, but a few others in an otherwise packed A340/ B777 looked enviously on as they were eyeing up the seats once we had taken off. For 2 recent SQ flights to / from LHR I havn't yet found a spare seat in Y yet though, never mind emergency exit!

Yes exit row seats do go empty. Last year on a flight from HKG-SIN. I had the right window seat one behind the exit row. An elderly women with a cane had the isle seat in my row and there was no one in the middle seat of the 747. When the doors closed there was no one in the entire exit row ahead of me. The elderly women then moved to the exit row. She didn’t last very long as a flight attendant politely told her that she was not allowed to sit in the exit row as these seats were reserved for people who can perform the emergency functions if required and given her limited mobility she did not qualify. She returned to her isle seat one behind the exit row and the entire exit row remained empty for the rest of the flight.

I travelled SQ between SIN and SYD last year. The child sitting behind was determined to kick the back of my seat for the duration of the flight. Cabin Crew cheerfully helped me to transfer to a row of empty exit row seats. The row on the opposite side were also empty. The seats beside me and the exit row on the far side of the cabin remained empty for the remainder of the flight.

If no one is seating on those seats, then nobody will perform these emergency functions if required ;)
