I do not know if this has been mentionned before but if I read correctly between the lines, AF will implement a 9 abreast config in its Airbus Y cabin when these aircraft will be reconfigured to Premium Voyageur.

3+3+3... Seems like a reason to stay away from them (for me) :td:

And according to (unconfirmed) info on a French forum, AF wanted to have the 380 in 11 abreast, but is blocked for the now by safety considerations.

There is one positive aspect in this move: I will be able to simplify my signature to "Avoid long haul flights in Eco on AF" (and KL as they will certainly follow).

AF and KL seem to be going the way of charter airlines. Even Air Berlin uses 8 abreast on standard 330s.

scandalous. Whoever is the brain behind the rethinking of the Y cabin on AF/KL planes must have genuine sadistic tendencies...

This is consistent with the low cost business model of AF. The 3x3x3 seating on A340/330 will be even worse than the 3x4x3 seating on 777s.Initially AF ruled it out coz not enough space.
Maybe they are precursors and all airlines will follow ??? But currently you can buy deep-discount Y tickets on airlines offering more comfortable seating competing on the same nonstop routes exCDG..

Gah! AF is quite decent in Y TATL avoiding the 3-4-3 777s but this will make it far less attractive.

Well, not even LCC Aer Lingus uses 3x3x3 on their A332 but 2x4x2 which is not too bad really... :D

Who wants to bet AFKL will be the first to implement standing space on their aircraft if it ever becomes a commercial reality? Oh, and bill it as an enhancement to boot?

Even more comfort for our Economy passengers!
With the launch of our new, "frêtageur" class, we are pleased to offer our Voyageur passengers 50% more space*

Actually, FR was the first carrier to explore this possibility. It has been apparently discarded for safety reasons.

I know that. Re-read my post ;-)

Comfort is not far from safety.

For my own comfort (or, should I say safety?), I try not to fly AF 777 in Voyageur anymore and try to stick on their Airbuses and their 2-4-2 config.

As long as they are not modified.

If I understand well, the changes are simultaneous (this is logical, they don't want the planes sit in workshops for too long).
So when the Premium Voyageur cabin is installed in the 772, 332 and 343, the Voyageur cabin is densified to 9 abreast.

Conclusion: check if the flight you want to take has Premium Voyageur!

Was it a typo that is now fixed?

Hopefully !

But has AF a quality control system ?

So I will have to change my signature again !

IIRC, that has been already confirmed in the past.

Sat on the A340 to ATL yesterday (hell of a lot better than the Delta 767).

I had a good look but it really just would not be physically possible to fit an extra seat in - not even AF (or FR) could manage and keep two aisles.

Oh thrust me, it can be done, and I had the bad luck to fly on a 3-3-3 WB Airbus 4 times, twice on Air Transat's A310 and twice on Corsair's 330-200.

I must say I still found the AF 777-300ER more UNcomfortable than AIr Transat a Corsair's Airbuses, probably due to the very narrow armrests that they have, which squeeze You next to the other passenger, making seating in there unbereable for me (and I'm a not a large person at all!).

Ciao

As said above it has been made on-board charter airlines.

But I have to agree with you: when I was traveling onboard 3-3-3 777 I had difficulty imagining how an additional seat could fit.

And then I tried it and saw it was possible, but with an unacceptably low level of comfort (I am not a large person either): when every movement of your neighbour wakes you up, a 12 hour night flight seems VERY long, and you arrive in VERY bad shape.

I just hope they don't take it as a challenge to prove me wrong....
