I received a cute clear envelope from AGR and Chase, enclosing an envelope of "forget-me-not" flower seeds, and offering 500 bonus AGR points for rediscovering the Chase Amtrak Mastercard and spending $100 from "now" through Oct. 31.
I used the card to pay for a lunch with colleagues today which will cover the required expenditure. Until about 2 weeks ago, my card had been unused since February due to the absence of Amtrak travel.
Not bad!
From Chase's perspective, a pretty good deal too, since it's 1/10 their acquisition cost for "new" customers.

Why?
Even when I don't travel on Amtrak , I use my card for "luxuries" like gas and food - and earn 1,000-2,000 AGR points a month!

I'm guessing that some folks do not have a singular interest in train travel and only train travel. I use three cards - two airline and one Amtrak - and swap between them as my miles and points needs change. Right now my Amtrak points balance is OK for my very occasional train riding, so it is airline miles time. The Amtrak card has been moved to slot three in my wallet.

Reindeerflame's offer, while cute, would not have motivated me. But what did motivate me was the targeted offer I just received for triple AGR points on all purchases for a two-month period, limit 10K bonus points per month. And no initial spend hurdle to get over before the bonus points kick in, unlike the Chase Priority Club Visa, which commands an annual fee unlike the Amtrak card.
I probably received this offer because my spend on the Amtrak card had been fairly substantial, but recently dropped off in favor of the Chase Continental Airlines Business Mastercard which offers a bonus for dining and gasoline expenditures, and whose points are transferable to Amtrak on a 1:1 basis in increments of 5,000 points.
