I would like to transfer MR points to ANA for a TA award. Is there anyway to determine what the taxes and fees might be on the award, before I transfet the miles? Also, Is there a limit as to how many miles I can transfer per year? I need to transfer 60,000 miles.

I just did this to get an award ticket in FC on ANA. I don't know if there is a limit, but I transferred 140,000 points with no problem. To get an idea of the taxes, just go onto the website and do a search as if you're going to buy a ticket. It will tell you what the taxes are before you have to buy anything.

Just remember to click on the details about the fare because you will also have to pay the fuel surcharge on top of the taxes.

You can only see the taxes/fees on their website if you have enough miles in your account, however, looking at the taxes on a revenue ticket should give you a ballpark figure (but be sure to look up hidden fuel surcharges which may or may not be included in the fare. You can see it in the fare construction on ITA if it is not a seperate line).

Oops. By "buy a ticket" I meant buying a revenue ticket. My bad.

When you click on the link for the fare details, there is a separate entry for the fuel surcharge so it should be easy to figure out how much you would have to pay.

Be very careful about comparing fees and taxes on a revenue seat. Just booked an two award tickets, LAX-NRT-BKK on NH metal, and the taxes were over double of the same revenue booking. Have not yet called the diamond desk to find out what is up with that but will post when I know more. Also a 60k transfer is no problem, just moved 100k into my account from Amex for the above mentioned award tix.

It will be interesting to hear what they say.

When I booked my award ticket at the end of September, I paid the same taxes that came up on a revenue ticket search (~$75). The woman who booked it for me told me I was very lucky because starting October 1st a fuel surcharge of about $150 would have been added and I would have to pay that as well. That charge does not appear in the "taxes/fees details" for some reason, but under the "fare details".

That charge does not appear in the "taxes/fees details" for some reason, but under the "fare details".

For a U.S. departure (or arrival?) that reason is U.S. government requirements. There can only be 'fare' and mandatory tax components, so fuel surcharge is characterized as fare.

Not wishing to redirect a thread but my searches weren't productive. Is it possible to reserve an international partner award with Mileage Club without sufficient points, then transfer in from Amex or Starwood? Thank you.

There is no amount limit , you can transfer as much as you want .
The tax might be much higher on ANA award ticket than any US based airlines as you have to pay YQ on certain airlines .

Using ANA mile does need to pay the fuel surcharge but the date change is free and there is no partner award ticketing fee. So I think it is pretty much the same if you take all these into consideration.

BTW, which route are you looking for?

As a data point, I booked a SQ/LH C ticket to Europe from JFK and taxes on each were in the ballpark of $400. It would have been cheaper for me to transfer to Air Canada and pay Amex 2 cents per point I would have needed for the higher AC award (12,000 points).

The feeling on the AMEX board is that AC is generally a better Amex transfer partner- especially because it transfers instantly.

Sure, the $1200 you have to pay on certain routes really is the same as UA's $0 date change fee and $20 ticketing fee. Or Aeroplan's $80 and $30.
