I'm guessing the answer is no, but...

My miles are due to expire in October.
If I were to order a flight with points for August 2010 and then cancel the flight in July 2010, would I get the miles returned to my account, and how long would they be valid for ?

Thanks,

Miles are credited after flying, not upon booking if I am not mistaken.
Cancelling after flying is a bit difficult.

Read again, more closely this time.

OP wants to book an award ticket in order to use up the miles and then cancel this hoping the miles will be charged back...

I'm somewhat disinclined though to believe in the feasibility of this undertaking...

I guess there are many more who want to know this. But because the rules are quite new, I don't know about any experiences yet...

Well, I did read more closely. Assuming that jetfan is correct, if the miles are charged (and not credited) only after actually flying, there will be nothing to be reimbursed, anyway. The question therefore should be: Do the rules allow to book a flight before the expiration date of the miles for a date after their expiration?

But jetfan is NOT correct. The miles are charged when the ticket is issued and not after flying. So the question is valid and, unfortunately, I don't know the answer.

I don't know the answer.

I think I have the answer.

Last May, I booked an award with AF for a relative of mine using her Ivory account, i.e. I used her miles to book her a ticket. Her miles were due to expire in June.

The flight was for August. Due to personal things in July, she decided not to fly. I called FB early August (before the flight) and cancelled the ticket.

Now guess what? The taxes were refunded (minus 45 EUR of course) but not the miles.

When I log into her account, FB has erased the activity, in her case the 30,000 miles debit from May.

In the end I decided to book a hotel voucher.

I know it's not the best use of points, but 35,000 points gets a night for 2 with Breakfast in a nice hotel in Bath.

The voucher is valid for 12 months, so we have some time to plan a trip.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.
