When trying to book tickets online for a friend, I am asked to give the passport number or FB number etc. of my friend for identification. Does anyone know if they really ceck at the airport or could I just fill in zero's?

Some years back, I booked and paid for a LHR-JNB ticket online without giving my passport details, as i dont carry those areound normally !

I had a phone call the following day from AF, telling me I had 24 hours to supply those details or they would cancel the ticket !

I havent flown them since... I was a FB plat, now down to cockroach !

Because of that????

All Airlines are required to ask for this kind of details by certain countries (e.g. the USA). You can't blame AF or any other airline for being strict on rules that have been imposed onto them. For example, till Switzerland joined the Schengen region a few months ago, LX required a passport number when booking a flight from ATH to either ZRH or GVA. They no longer do this now, though, as no passport is required to enter Switzerland when coming from Greece.

Obviously not exclusively because of this.

This is NOT something required by SA, and wasnt at the time a UK requirement either.

It was the way the AF staff member was so absolutely insisitent that if this was not done within 24 hours AF would cancel my already paid for ticket.
