Would I be charged to the $15 fee to check in my carry-on if there is no longer any room left in the overhead?

No, it would be free. This happened to me the other day and they checked my bag no problem.

If there is no room in the overhead (happens all the time now on full flights) no, you won't be charged to have your bag gate checked and sent to baggage claim.

Now if one manages to get through security with 3 or 4 large carryons...and is deliberately gaming the system, hoping that excess bags will be gate checked avoiding the $15 fee....IMHO the agents should charge for that. I was on an ATL-SFO flight earlier this year where a passenger dragged 3 rollaboards on, holding up boarding and no one stopped her or asked her to check her bags.

You are not charged if there is no more room, however wahooflyer is correct. If you show up to the gate with more than one carry on (plus you personal item) you WILL be charged to check you bags.
There will always be someone who thinks thay can get around it, and sometimes do because the gate agents are so busy, but we are always on the lookout for those who think they can do that because it is just not fair to those who had to pay.

I dont fly FL much, but yesterday I came across a gate agent who was on a power trip at MSP. First off the the plane was delayed twice, but we did not see a gate agent arrive at the gate until 30 minutes after the initial departure time. With the weather in MSP and ATL many of the flights were delayed and there were a lot of antzy people wanting information, but there were no FL employees anywhere.

A lady did show up a little before the delayed departure and began boarding. After zone 3, she said that the plane was full and that all bags were to be gate checked. She even wanted me to check my briefcase because she said it would not get under the seat. I was carrying my wife's backpack because she was pregnant and was yelled at because I was carrying too many bags.

We were in zone 7 and when we got in the plane, I counted 8 bins open when the doors closed. There were a lot angry people on the pane because we had to wait longer to have all that gate check bags loaded in the plane.

Also some had a bag of glass ornaments that she did not want to check and asked if they had any fragile stickers or tags. She laughed at lady and said who do you think we are, we currently and will never have fragile anything on this airline.
