I'm in the middle of an AONE3 ex-ICN, and I'm going to finish it off in January. Currently considering adding Africa and changing to an AONE4, the cost really isn't that much for what turns out to be a fair number of miles and AA EQPs if I do this right.

As I read rule 4(e).3 from the Technical Rule Sheet,

For travel to/from or via Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania two permitted in Europe when one is a transfer without stopover between Ghana/Nigeria/Kenya/Uganda/Tanzania and another continent.

This means that I can't go LAX-LHR-MCT-LHR-DXB-LHR-JNB-LHR-ACC-LHR-HKG because that would be three intercontinental transfers in LHR. (I assume that since LHR, DXB and MCT are all considered in the same area, those LHR transfers don't count.) But what if I purchase a separate ticket JNB-ACC?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Replace JNB-LHR-ACC with a surface segment JNB//ACC, and note that the LHR between ACC and HKG has to be a transit (under 24 hours).

There is another problem. You can only have 2 long intra-europe flights to/from UK. You have 4.

I noticed this problem as well.

"Not more than 2 of which may be between the UK and ALGERIA,
BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA, BULGARIA, CROATIA, CYPRUS,
GREECE, ISRAEL, LIBYA, MALTA, MIDDLE EAST , MOROCCO,
PORTUGAL, ROMANIA, RUSSIA, SERBIA, TUNISIA, UKRAINE
whether part of the free continent allowance of 4 coupons, purchased as
additional coupons, or a combination of both"

OK, so there'll be only one MR to MCT or DXB. Because AA doesn't give elite status bonus points on BA flights other than codeshares, that makes the idea of adding Africa much less attractive, especially counting in the additional cost of JNB/ACC or NBO. So, I think that I'll not add Africa (at a cost of approximately USD$950), and just do something like LAX-LHR-MCT-LHR-HKG.

Thanks, as always, for your assistance. I am always amazed at both the quantity and quality of the knowledge and information one can find here, not to mention the readiness of other FTers to jump in and help.

Cheers!!

If you want to add a fourth continent mainly for the miles/points, then South America is your best bet. Not only are the intercontinental flights pretty long, but you get full AA credit including elite bonus on Lan, plus you can use the rule allowing a transit-without-stopover in N. America on the way onward, e.g. LAX-SCL-GIG-SCL-xLAX-LHR...

Lan doesn't have F any more, but its J service is pretty decent. AA has F to EZE and GIG from JFK and/or MIA.

Don't forget to use the AA code on LHR-MCT if you're coming directly off LAX-LHR.

Thanks, Gardyloo, I know that I can always count on you for good advice. A fourth continent would only be for miles/points. I thought that that rule only applied between Pacific and S.A. I'll have to go back and reread the rules. If you're right as usual :-) then I'll go back and recalculate cents/mile for adding S.A. to see if it's worth it.

Yup, got it. One of the first things I checked in looking for ex-LHR MRs.

Thanks again!!!

Are you out of sectors? Otherwise you can do SA to Europe via a transit in NA.

Also make sure you reserve LHR-MCT-LHR early as availability there can be tight. Often you have entire families flying taking up almost the entire cabin.

Other "A" seat routes to/from S. America include JFK - GRU (AA daily, JL 3 times a week) and EZE - GRU - LHR (BA).

Thanks. The problem with most of these routes is that it's an early morning arrival and a late night return. Everyone seems content to have their 777s or (in the case of JL) the 744 sit around for more than 12 hours. I don't want to kill that kind of time, especially given that it's a pure MR on the way to south Asia. I'll look in more detail, but that's what I found in a quick look around so far.

Ah, I think I found one, -- JFK-GIG, with a stop in GRU. Real F in a 777, only about six hours on the ground until return, and 4.18¢ (US) per mile if I add S.A. continent. Am I missing anything? GIG showers back in operation yet?
